Hi folks,
I'm thinking about running a new subwoofer setup this summer. Has anyone tried aiming their subs differently from just firing towards the rear of the car? I will be using a single 15" (ported enclosure). I'm thinking about these setups:

1) Subs firing rearward, ports firing upward
2) Subs firing upward, ports firing upward
3) Keep same setup - Subs rearward, ports rearward

Any thoughts?

With most cars, having the sub and port firing towards the rear of the car is best.

Yeah, that's why I've always been setting it up that way. Hatchbacks actually respond firing upwards. I wonder how the SHO would react with this kind of setup.... anyone have tried firing the subs upward on their SHO's?

I have two 10" Kickers faceing up powered by a Sony 1000W amp. Works good. This spring I am going to change the back seat to allow the Kickers a port into the car.

The farther away the sub is from you, the louder it will sound. it gives the waves more time to amplify or something. thats why you can here someone elses bass so good, even from blocks away.

I've found the best position for my 12" Pioneer Premier in a ported (vented at 37hz) box is facing the rear of the car in the spare tire well. Bass response is AMAZING...the lows actually hurt a little bit. True, I lost the spare tire, but I didn't have one in the first place. Every other position I've found has been inferior to that.

I think it depends on personal preference. I have mine firing towards the rear bumper. I've tried the different positions, and didn't notice much of a difference. Best thing to do is try it out when you get the system

18's? Wow that is big. I assume it's a sealed box, right? What sub are you using? Have you considered trying the sub using a angled/hatchback type box firing towards the back?

General rule of thumb - that is the best way. I've always run my subs that way. Just trying to do something different. I trying to have someone build a box for this current setup. I wondering if I should have the ports fire in a different direction than the subs, for a change.

How could your subs fire towards the rear, when it's mounted in the spare wheel well?

I said the BOX is sitting in the spare tire well, facing the rear of the car. the sub is about 4" away from the rear of the car. it's **** on the lights back there, but it sure hits hard.

Would it be better to remove the stock sub housing? I come from the school of thought that sound sounds better to not go thru objects. Then again, I don't have experience with big bass systems.

Also, with two 10"s and a 1000w amp, the stock sub's not doing anything but moving with the air that the bigger subs are moving. Probably doing more harm than good.......

its a kicker cv-r, sealed box under spec for the sub. i had a larger box but i needed more trunk space so this is a little quieter and sealed. i have considered the angled/hatch type but then i get into space confinements again. this is a little over the top for most peoples applications.

heres another view of it

Not bad... Not a Kicker fan myself, but heard that one is slightly better than the Comp VR's. Lots of wires sticking out everywhere :omg:

I'd take out that stock box too, since there's another sub playing the low notes. It wouldn't do any good to keep it. I, myself, is trying to find a stealth way to mount an 8" midbass driver inside the cabin somewhere... :oogle:
