From what I've heard, the best sound is achieved through directing the low frequencies into a solid part of the car. My old 2x10" setup was loudest when the drivers fired as close as possible to the rear of the car, almost touching the back of the trunk. Moving them so the box was touching the back seat just made them rattle. Now I have a single 12" firing down into the floor of the trunk. Still sounds good but I'll bet it could be louder.

Thems the words that ALWAYS pertain to custom car audio. If you want perfection in sound, it's gonna take fabrication.

It's not nearly as heavy as you may think.....if you line your trunk with it, you'll gain MAYBE 25-30lbs....besides....you have around 100lbs of audio in your car already.......

What have all you done to make your trunk a little quieter? Mine rattles from like 2 blocks.?
New trunk seal/weatherstripping, all four bolts in rear license plate, and you can also dynamat the backside of the plate... they make kits for 'em.

has anyone sprayed their whole trunk in bedliner, or rubberized undercoating to deaden the sound? i have done this in 2 previous cars, mainly after rust repair...not for sound deadening...so i did not notice any less rattling.

O yeah, forgot to mention, it'll probably sound better getting it close to the rear of the car. Try putting the subs around 6-8" from the back of the car.

I have installed many subs in many sho and the best sound and response we have found is about 6-8 inchs away from the back bumper firing subs upwards in a trunk is just a waste of air flow. You will get so much extra trunk rattle and the air is firing up instead of back. Unless of course you have a ported box with the sub up and the port forward like was said already. It all depends on prefrence, box design, sub specs, exc exc.. its basically trial and error. just goto you local audio shop and have them try a few different enclosures in your car then pick which one you like the best. P.S. jl audio use to make a box with 3 12wo's in it and this box fit perfect into the SHO tight agnist the back seat with no room on either side. Sounded great.

I had 2 Alphasonic 10's in a box built to spec for them (ported). I had a Dual 350 or 360watt somthing amp running them. W/ the box up tight against back seat, firing rearwards(same w/ the ports), stock box removed, and all sound deadener removed between the seat and the trunk, it sounded awsome. the system didnt have much power running it but the sound quility was amazing and it hit pretty good to. I built the entire system for less then 20 bucks. Car had good highs and a decent deck in it when i bought it and the subs, amp, and most of the wiring i got for free. i only had to buy RCA cables and a few fuses

Didn't I pretty much say this already?

I've found the best position for my 12" Pioneer Premier in a ported (vented at 37hz) box is facing the rear of the car in the spare tire well. Bass response is AMAZING...

yeah firing back is the best i have tried everything and the best i found was up against the back of the seat firing back to the rear it was a little bit louder with it farther back like 8 inches from the back of the trunk but i didnt want to sacrifice all my trunk space for my subs i have 2 12's with a custom enclosure that just fits in between the tire wells i like it there and thats where it will stay!!
