ok heres the deal i did my acc. belts bout 2 weeks ago didnt drive the car much after due to a suspended license i snuck it out every once in awhile and it ran fine no problems. just the other day i get my license back so i take the car out and i smell rubber burning i get under the hood and notice that the tensioner on the second set of belts (i have a mtx) is not spinning :madflame: wtf. it would spin periodically and then stop.

so i figured maybe the belt was to loose retightened it and i also thought maybe the tensioner nut was on to tight i loosened it a hair and put it all back together and still it wont spin.

so what is the problem? do i need a new tensioner pulley? are the bearings shot? (there is no metal on metal scraping or any other noise coming from the tensioner) any help is much appreciated.

i also did a search and didnt come up with much a lot bout timing belt tensioners. the only conclusion i got from the search is that it may have seized up. thanks again.

With the engine running the pulley should be moving. If it stops occassionally it is going to sieze very soon. In fact, if it won't spin, it IS siezed. If one tensioner is near siezure, the other is not far behind. It is time to replace the siezed tensioner pulley, and plan on replacing the other tensioner pulley soon. rangerj

The bearing is toast, you need an new pully. It is not available aftermarket (dealer only item).

There have been a few threads over the past year concerning the possible replacement of the bearing itself, I don't recall if there was sucess or not in locating a suitable replacement bearing.

Pretty impressive cloud of smoke, eh? BTDT in the Blockbuster parking lot, no less.
