When I have my A/C on in traffic my A/C compressor just kinda stops. I know it isn't suppose to run all the time but when it is cycling it doesn't come back on, but when on the freeway it is usually ok. If I stop the engine anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes it will start to blow again. I just replaced all the hoses, drier, and the pressure cycling switch but not the compressor. Any Ideas?

sounds like you may need an a/c clutch adjustment. if you have it in your driveway running with the a/c on, tap the clutch face with a broomhandle or something and see if the compressor kicks on. if it does it is most likely the clutch then. it seems pretty easy to adjust but when mine got funny i just replaced the whole compressor. maybe some of the others will chime in with some ideas on this. good luck!!

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try adjusting the clutch, anyone else have any ideas?
Try what BoB ATX said with the broomstick first. If that doesn't work, then we'll have some more ideas.

Goto SHOTIMES.com and look up how to adjust the clutch gap. Mine was doing the same thing yours is. I removed one of the washers like the procedure says, put it all back together, and boom! ICE COLD AIR with clutch that engages and disengages as it should.

Thanks guys, I'll do that. My engine tem is normal, and my freeon level is good, It blows colder than it ever has when it is working but then it stops blowing cold, like the compressor isn't working. I'll adjust the clutch and hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks again guys, in this Texas 100 degree weather it really gets to you with out A/C.

dilligaf,

As the clutch surfaces wear the the gap gets bigger. The gap should be approximately .035, in general. Check your model year for the recommended gap.

When the gap gets too wide the A/C will periodically refuse to engage, which sounds like your situation. Try the old broom handle trick, and adjust the clutch gap if necessary.

If that does not do it, get back to us. rangerj

I was having a similar problem with my a/c, but now when I turn it on, it sounds like a grinding metal noise. I'm hoping it's just the clutch...any opinions rangerj? shrug

SAMMAGE,

There are two clutch surfaces, one on the clutch face, and the other on the clutch pulley. The surfaces are both metal and could be worn and slipping.

The pulley has a bearing that could be grinding because it is dry.

Lastly, the compressor may have worn out bearings that are grinding.

Remove the drive belt and spin the pulley. Listen for a dry bearing. Then try the compressor. Put a socket on the nut or hex head on the compressor shaft and turn the compressor shaft.

A mechanics stethescope helps to hear any grinding noise in either the bearing or the compressor.

Check the gap between the clutch surfaces. If it is out of specification, remove the clutch face and remove a "shim" washer to narrow the gap, then try the A/C after you put it back together.

Let us know what you find. rangerj
