Hello everyone, a little stumped on this, hope you can help. I had the AC converted to R-134 and replaced the ETAC with a new unit from Ford. The problem is, that when the AC is on. The car stuters, has little power, Fells like it is going to stall. Not that I make it a practice to hammer on the car with the AC on, but it just sputters throughout the powerband. Now, if the AC is off, it runs like a champ! Anyone ran into this before?

Is the compressor kicking on and off? If it is, then you are low on R-134. If not, then it looks like you have an increase in load once the compressor clutch kicks in. Most likely you have a worn compressor clutch and will need replacing.

Fusion,

Sounds like the A/C is putting a drag on the engine.

Why?

The A/C compressor my be getting ready to sieze due to internal problems. The A/C pulley bearing may be getting ready to sieze and is "dragging".

The internal pressure in the A/C system may be too high due to moisture in the system, too much refrigerant in the system, too much oil in the system, or a blockage in the system, such as the accumulator/dryer is full and blocked.

A R-134a system needs about 85% of the amount of refrigerant as a system with R-12 in it. Did the person doing the conversion put in the same amount of R-134a as the system calls for of R-12?

Check your clutch pulley bearing for "free" movement, then the compressor (turns freely), and then consider pressure testing the A/C system.

Hope this helps, rangerj.
