If the ABS light is "ON" then the ABS system is not working. The brakes will work as non ABS brakes. As for the brakes feeling "like crap", this is due to something other than the ABS system. Determine what the problem is in the regular braking system, then you can turn your attention to the ABS system.

The description, "the brakes feel like crap", does not give us anything to work with for diagnosing the problem. Is the car pulling to one side? Is the pedal vibrating or pumping? Are the brakes dragging? Do you have a "low" or spongy pedal? What are the symptoms? rangerj

Yeah you brakes shouldn't feel any different you just wont have ABS with the light on. Now if it were the red brake waring light I could see that. Anyway you can't just get your code like you can like the engine codes. You can get a cheap Ford code reader at Wall Mart that will do the job, they shouldn't be even $20. Always repair the first code first and then reset and try again.

The brakes feel like crap because the pedal is pulsating whether of not you touch it. The light is on because the ABS is constantly trying to engage even with the car off. I have unplugged the abs computer and no fix of the idiot light nor the constant sound coming from the abs unit itself

Check the ABS pump relay. It sounds like a stuck relay. See a service manual at a local library, such as Mitchels, Chiltons, or Motors, for the location of the relay and the test procedures for your model year. You can disconnect the relay and if this stops the problem a new relay is easy to install. rangerj

Just an update...we pulled the 40amp ABS fuse from under the hood and the light went away as did the pump constantly trying to engage. Obviously the ABS will not function but I honestly am not worried about the ABS working or not. My only question now is will the ABS interfere with anything (I wouldn't think so but I am not too familiar with ABS)? Thanks again until I can find and troubleshoot that relay

When my ABS light came on I checked for codes and sure enough I had a bad ABS sensor.

I changed it out and the lights gone.

You have disabled the ABS. Now the brakes will work as non ABS brakes. As long as nothing else is on the circuit from which you pulled the fuse, there will not be any collateral problems. IIRC the ABS is the only thing affected by that fuse. The relay should be attached to a bracket in front of the pump motor. Cheers, rangerj
