today i attempted to put in a new cv axle because the boot tore and the cv starting popping. well after i pull the axle out of the transmission tranmission fluid started pouring out... is this normal. i have new axle seals. well it stopped shortly after.. i thought that it might be overflow because when i installed the trans i put 3 1/4 quarts of fluid through the sensor on top of the trans because the fill plug was seized. anyway after a couple hours its back on its wheels and so far so good untill i approach a hill/turn and i here a crick crick pop pop... i thought no way... this is a new unit. not a reman. what els could sound like a cv joint pop? and whats the deal with the fluid issue? i grinded 2 times going into reverse and i never grind gears. i also noticed doug lewis did not completly seal the case. i saw small/verysmall droplets coming from between the two halves. any input?

..the MTX only takes 2 qts if im not mistakin . and yes its normal to lose most of the fluid when you pull the axle, they go directly into the diff inside the trans. search for the drain plug install while you are doing this you will thank yourself later being able to change trans fluid quickly.

It is normal and expected to lose a fair amount of fluid when you pull an axle. The tranny should be refilled once the axle is back in place.

Every MTX I've had has weeped small amounts of ATF between the case halves. In my experience they just do that.

You need to get the drain plug removed as that is how you check the level of the fluid.

SHO's do tend to grind in reverse. Going first into 4th helps.

ok im sorry if this was a stupid question i didnt realize the trans fluid qould come out.... as far as the fill plug goes i tried getting it out with the trans out and in the car and it was seized on there... i broke 3 air impact wrench extensions trying to get it off. but i filled the trans through the sensor on top of the trans (what sensor is that again?).. as far as the popping goes... can broken motermounts cause this or possibly a broken trans mount?

How did you know when the fluid level was correct? Normally it is filled up to the bottom of the fill hole. With the fill hole plugged, you may have over or under filled it.

If you can, post a pic of the seized fill plug.

Maybe heat up the case a little with some mapp gas or something around the plug, and then use a long ratchet or breaker bar? I don't know if that would be acceptable or not.

Since nobody said it, and we're dealing with zach, make sure the car is level when you fill the tranmission up with fluid (while it installed and the axles are in). If you over fill it, you're likely to see more fluid dripping from the trans after you drive it a bit, heating up the fluid and slinging it around.

They took 3.1 qts. last I heard!
Close. Ford Factory Service Manual says 6.1 pints = 3.05 quarts:

Hey man, when you have no way of confirming your result (i.e. "to bottom of fill hole"), exactness counts.

Also, the "factory manual" answer to a question carries more weight than an everyday "Me too" response, and deserves to be highlighted in a thread. IMO.
