For the 96 brake upgrade do you have to use spindles and brakes off a SHO or does a sable or standard taurus have the right parts?

If you have 94'-95' sho you can use existing spindle otherwise steal spindle from any 94'-95' slo or sho's!

I am a little biased (pardon the pun) because we build the SHO lettered Stage 3 kits in 12" and 13".

We have run the 96 kit in the past, and it is a great street setup. Many of us tracked (road course) on the 96 kit, and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. That was until we ran a set of 12" or 13" Cobra PBRs.

The 13" Cobra PBR kit is a great value for the stopping power. Make sure everything is strapped down in your car because it will end up on the dashboard (or in the back of your head). You need 17" wheels (or the perfect 16" Team Dynamics rims) to run 13" brakes. so there can be an extra cost in wheels if you don't have them.

The 12" Cobra PBR kit costs more than the 13" kit, but it fits under slicers and most 16" wheels. The braking force of the 12" kit is only slightly less than the 13" kit, and it is lighter, so I think you pick up a little acceleration as a trade off.

96 rotors can warp, but I have yet to warp the 12" or 13" rotors. You also get a huge selection of pads with the Cobras you don't get with the '96 kit.

I have never ran the Stage 2 kit (Mustang GT over 10.2 rotors), but the smaller rotor worries me a bit.

Some people are running a Cobra caliper over an 11.6 rotor, which I think is better, but I am a little worried about warping the rotors under harder use.

I don't know if that helps. Personally, I am sold on the 12" or 13" kit. Everyone who has tried them would NEVER go back to the 96 kit, but if you only need a street set up, the 96 kit works great.

I'm with Mike.

Not only do my 12 inch SHO/Cobra brakes he supplied me with stop better then the 11.6 upgrade kit I disposed of to put them on, the SHO badge on them is wicked cool.

If I didn't have to revert to the stock slicers for winter snowtire use I'd have gone for the 13" version.

In fact if I was motivated I'd go for the 13" package for summer and swap rotors for stock slicer use back to 12" come winter.

But sadly at the moment I'm not motivated....

Another question on the same subject...

Is there anything I can do with my current Mustang GT setup to upgrade further? I am trying to explore my options as far as finding a new setup for the upcoming track season. The GT brakes are not enough, and the calipers flex/spread after a while.

Do you mean the light, two-piston PBR calipers? If they use the same bracket as the HD calipers it should be just a swap, but I don't know whether that's true. Do they use 412-series pads?

What exactly is the difference between the GT/PBR and COBRA/PBR????? And what size rotors can I use with the GT/PBR's, because I have two sets from a 2001 GT.

This was the onld Midwest SHO stage II kit. I don't really know any details other than the calipers fit a GT. The GT calipers use an 804 pad, a 619105 bracket, and an 11009 caliper. The Cobra uses the 412 pad, and 11013 caliper. It looks to me like the Cobra caliper is sold with an integrated bracket.

The key thing for me is to be able to use slicers since I can't afford two sets of 17" rims and tires. I already have two sets of slicers with good tires, and a set of 16x7.5 wheels ready for R-compounds.

The plain GT calipers are a cheaper design that flexes under hard braking. The Cobra calipers are much stronger. I'm not sure, however if they are dimensionally the same as far as mounting points and pad location. I am using Gen 2 10.9" rotors right now. I would like to upgrade to the 11.6" ones if I can.

http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=56971&highlight=cobra+11.6" I think I just found what I am looking for.

If it's the 412 pad and it looks like the red one in the thread you cited, then that's the HD caliper and it'll hold up fine on the track. There's a lighter-duty two-piston caliper from PBR that people sometimes get confused with the HD version, and they _won't_ hold up on the track under hard use.

I have a 90 model, so basically any spindle will work or any taurus 1994-2000?

The calipers that PAracer is referring to used to be on my 92. They are definitely the light/cheap pieces. And yes, they are useless for track duty. I learned that lesson at Putnam Park.

One thing to note is that the GT calipers are sold separate from their brackets. The heavy duty Cobra calipers are sold with brackets and slide pins.

Fixed it for ya. :thumb:

When I had to replace my GT calipers after the "overheat" incident, the replacements I bought came with new brackets and slide pins. Some places sell calipers with brackets, some don't. Depends on the place you shop at.

Awesome! Thanks for the correction. :salute: I went off of what Rock Auto was showing me.
