not without EXTENSIVE modifications.

You can however modify a GENIII subframe to fit a GEN II and use the complete suspension.

Yes, it can be done, but the question is should it be done... in a word No. It can be and has been done, but it requires modifications of the lower control arms. But there is a problem with doing it. Since the pivot point of the ball joint is moved up by almost 2" it completely changes the suspension geometry. It changes the roll center and screws with the steering scrub radius which makes the car very unstable at speed. Bump steer is also amplfied on lowered cars.

Are you referring to swapping just the 96 knuckles, or the entire subframe assembly? Or both?

Knuckles only. The only way to do it properly is with a complete subframe swap.
