I've read a few different posts and none of them seem to describe my exact ATX thunkiness.
My '95 thunks & "jumps" into second gear when cold - and it only happens once per start.

Here are the conditions:
- Cold, on a fresh start after sitting 30 minutes or more
- First gear is fine, then at about 3000 RPM it "jumps/thunks" into 2nd
- Then it rives fine

Any thoughts?

My built trans with a high stall converter does this. The first trans did it for 174k, and now the new one does it with 50k on it. I wouldn't worry about it.

The "thump" noise, however, may be a motor mount.

ok, It's from where it's still cold, if you let it sit there for approx. 15 minutes or so to warm up, it won't do it.

ATX "hidden feature"

It comes with that model at no extra charge.

I read in the manual:
1995 SHO ATX - RPO 1382: Project Splash
...this special option allows drivers - and passengers - of the 1995 Ford Taurus SHO Automatic to fully enjoy that "wide awake" feeling from their morning coffee being spilled on their laps while the car jumps into second gear...

Wow, for 1995 they were ahead of their time!

My original unit did this. As the unit got older it did it worse.

My rebuilt original unit that lasted ~75k didn't do it at all.

My remanned FoMoCo unit doesn't do it at all.

If it a cold start issue and that tranny is original then my guess is the the cool fluid in the trans is slightly denser (once it's warmed up it becomes more viscous) which would help in creating a pressure build up in the time between 1st gear disengaging and 2nd gear engaging.

I know is much more complicated than that but i'm too lazy to get technical lol

I bought an ATX that had this problem. I changed the fluid and filter [cheaper than jumping straight to a rebuild] and the problem went away, putting at least 50k miles on the transmission before I sold the SHO.

I found a really simple fix: When I first start the car I put it in 2nd gear and it shifts perfectly from first to second, then I pop it in D. No clunks, thinks or any of that crap! Next time I change the fluids I'll do the tranny fluid and filter and see if that helps.
