93 ATX

My 93 ATX is in the transmission shop.
It's there because of a shifting problem.
After its warm, it loses the 2-3 shift. Also it doesn't seem to know when to downshift from 2nd to 1st gear. Premature 2-1 downshift.
And the old slide bump 1-2 shift.
Any fixes?

Depending on how many miles are on the tranny, it may be near the end of it's life. Or it may just be your Vehicle Speed Sensor, though I'm not sure a bad sensor will cause those symtoms. Nevertheless, do a search on "VSS". If you do need a rebuild, consider getting yourself a transmission from Doug at Ford Performance Specialist. Or if you know the shop real well, have them price it out for you. Good luck, the ATX tranny has a very short life, well some of them.

How many miles on the car? I am pretty sure you are at the rebuild stage. Get it done right or it will become a nightmare. I have two FPS built trannys and am happy with them. 55K miles and 11K miles on the rebuilds.
I would first call Doug up and tell him your problems and see what he thinks. They are busy but good about just talking. You might have to call back several times, but it is free advice! He has a huge amount of SHO and ATX know how.

The 93' ATX is weakest of the bunch. The 94'-95' ATXs were much improved. Parts (Pistons Sleeves etc) that were Aluminum in the 93' tranys are steel in the 94'-95' versions.

I just so happen to have an excellent 94' ATX for sale. I would like $500 for it. It shifts great and does not slip. I will me at Mark Nunnaly's (Pottersville NY) on November 16 if you want it.

My 93 has 65,000 miles.
What I am looking for are technical suggestions for my tranny mechanic. He has alot of experience with Taurus and AXOD. I have already learned that the 93 has aluminum pistons and plates and the 94-95 has stainless. This will help.
We are also testing the speed sensor.
Has anyone had positive results with shimming the servo piston for more or less travel?
My guy says it has worked before.

You can't go wrong with Doug at FPS. He built the tranny that holds up to the power put down by my supercharged 93.

Regardless of what you decide to do with the tranny itself, you need to upgrade the PCM to the D4U1 out of the '94/'95 ATX. The H3Z that was used in the '93 has a bad shift program, which was updated in '94.

You can probably find a used one for under $100. Takes about 10 minutes to swap it, but will make your shifts firmer (not harsh). Soft, sloppy shifts (like with the H3Z program) are baaad for the ATX.
