My tranny finally when out on me at 141K. Not sure if I want to keep the car much longer. How much is a fair or average price to rebuild my tranny.

Depends. I would only go through Doug Lewis at Ford Specialists (not sure but maybe $2-3k). Others have had a few successes but a good many people go through a terrible ordeal to try to get it done correctly. Warranty or not. Warranty does not ensure competency. Whether Doug's price is something you are willing to shoulder for a car you may not keep is another matter.

Amen. I am currently driving my wifes 2000 Taurus because my SHO is in the shop AGAIN! Trans was rebuilt about two years ago by the local mercury dealer with a shift kit. Approx. three months ago, it started shifting really hard to second gear. Trans was removed and found a broken accumulator spring. Had him re-check his work installing the shift kit. (Trans still didn't shift right.) Got the car back, trans worked perfect, for about a week. Then it would slip very badly for about two or three days, then work properly for about two weeks. The tech wanted to see it not working right before he would work on it again. Finally took the car back when it was in it's slipping stage. He drove it when it was slipping and now will pull the trans.
I wish I would have known about Doug's transmissinon at the time of the original rebuild. My car has about 20,000 miles since the original rebuild and I have spent more than buying a Doug Lewis trans and shipping the core both ways.
I drove a BMW 535I Saturday. Almost bought it.
