93 ATX Slipping on downshift

My 93 ATX has been slipping on down shift for about a year now. The plan was to drive it till it died but now I'm wondering if it isn't major.

Off the line it shifts up to 3 with no problems. now if I am driving and hit a hill and give it some gas it will hesitate and slam into 2nd. I can manually put it into second and there is a delay from 3rd as well. This is the condition it has been in since I got the car and hasnt gotten any worse in the course of a year. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

The fluid is bright red and in great condition.

I was thinking solenoid but that's as far as my thought process got.

Sounds like it is your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) this will give pretty much the same symptoms.. Mine is going out, but it's not as bad as yours..
It is a royal pain to change..(of course!):laugh_ti:
Also, manually shifting your atx is not good for it. (unless you have had work done to it).

Yep just like what was said in the post above me your Tranny is fine you just need to replace your vss sensor.

I just replaced mine about a month ago with the same problems and it fixed everything, the part was about 20 bucks and took me about a hour to replace.

I just lifted up the car and removed the y-pipe and the sensor is right there so it's not bad to replace but if your bolts are rusted on the y-pipe you might want to spray them with wd-40 the night before to loosen them up.
