93 Atx Question

What would cause my ATX in my 93 to shift a little too early from 1st gear to second(after it gets warm). It seems to be fine until it gets warm. The trans is fine otherwise-120000 miles-could have a rebuilt-does not slip(that I can tell). Comments are welcome-

My 94 is doing the same thing. Hard shifting from 1st to seconed and then again from 2nd to 1st. It only happens when the car warms up. I expected this to happen and heard it does when cold. Go figure.

Any ideas?

you've got a 93, you need a D4U1!! Far superior to the 93 trans computer, Lemme tell ya, my good buddie's 93 trans felt horrible and with the D4U1 its a world of differnce. I can sell you one for a very affordable price if you are intersted. PM me for details..

I have pulled the codes. I am getting a bad egr signal(clogged pipes? from exaust) but other than that all ok. Light comes on and stays on after a few minutes. That is a recorded code-no running codes indicated. I am looking for a computer-quote me a price-

Can you explain what you mean by a little early. Does it have any reason. Like only on 3/4 throttle, or only WOT. A little more info would help out. I know that a bad VSS signal will cause it to shift early, or not at all sometimes. But the key here for us to help you is going to be more information.

Also although unfortunately alot of the archives have been lost with the forum "upgrade" you will generally find better answers by searching then you will get by posting a question, especially in the older posts.
Both times when my VSS failed I could feel my trans "searching for gears" especially when coming to a stop or climbing a hill. When my TSS failed I had a hard shift from 1-2 when heated. All times I had stored codes indicating the source. Although the TSS didnt show up the first couple of times I pulled them. If you get nada then clear the codes as shown and drive until the problems persist and pull them again. It may be the TSS, VSS, or your tranny may have internal issues. The codes will help you in eliminating mechanical issues and focus on sensor related problems.
The AtX TSS is about 20 bucks and a breeze to replace, but I could only get one from the dealer, the VSS is around 50, and can be found at many parts stores, and a sincere PITA to replace. With your mileage both are possible culprits, but so may be the tranny. The stored codes will help in diagnosing, and determine whether its gonna be 20-50 bucks and an afternoon or 12-1500 dollars and a week.

Tell me where the TSS(explain what this stands for-transmission speed sensor?) is located and I will try that. I already got the VSS(and yes it is a real pain to change it so I am waiting till I change my rod bearings to tackle that) I have pulled the codes and it did not indicate anything except a bad egr signal. I might be new to the sho's world of funniness but I have been working on cars for 25 years. It is the sensor/intremittent problems that cause me grief. Thanks for the info in advance-M

Drivers side just above and (if I remember right,... you may want to run a search on TSS to be sure) to the right of the halfshaft. It has 2 wires going to it and plugs into the trans. Remove the wheel and use a 1/4" drive w/ extension to reach it through the wheel well. Its held in by one small hex screw, after you remove it gently pry the sensor out. Remember to disconnect the battery before removing and relearn idle when finished. About 20 minutes start to finish.

On the subject of 93's and their tranny's... I read that mid-year they received the better internals. How would one tell if their 93 was a mid year (or later) car?
