93 ATX, 117k miles. Will blow fuse and prevent the park lock from releasing. If the key is on but not running, you can put it in neutral, start, and then drive it. Also, when that fuse is blown, the brake lights don't work at all. Any input would be appreciated.

I would look for a frayed wired around the brake peddle and the fuse box hinge. Those are the two most likely places for a short in that circuit.

Did you have the speed control recall, 05S28, performed on your car? If not, the deactivator switch on the bottom of the brake master cylinder may be leaking and may be causing a short circuit that will blow the fuse needed for the brake lamp circuit and shift lock mechanism.

If you haven't, it' s STRONGLY recommended that you 1) Unplug the switch (will disable cruise but nothing else) and 2) Call your dealer for a recall appointment.

The connector isn't easy to get to, so be prepared to cuss a bit.

I just did a brake pressure sensor on the redline I sold, so it cannot be any worse. You don't have to be drunk as heck to work on sho's :laugh_ti:

The previous owner said it was done, but no documentation given. I'll unplug it and check for the frayed wire as well.

BPP switch won't cause the fuse to blow.

I had the same issue when I had my 93. I had no brake lights and would have to put the car into run but not start it to put the car into neutral before starting the car.

I found out about the recall which had not been done. I new switch and harness later, I had brake lights, could shift out of park, and my cruise started working.

(fixed) ;)

Those are good candidate locations for a short. Then the wires run in that big bundle that follows the driver's side door sill back to the trunk. Another likely candidate location is under the driver's door sill plate, since the driver has gotten in and out of that car a few hundred thousand times over the years.
