I have a 93 ATX and just had the alternator rebuilt. I have noticed a high pitch whine from the engine bay. I don't think it is the power steering because it doesn't change in pitch when I turn the wheel. It changes in tune with the engine revs. It sounds like it coming from the passenger side of the engine. Could this be the alternator? Thanks guys.

it could possibly be the intake tube. crazy i know but when it does it, grab the tube and pinch it. it has some weird harmonic while at idle that makes it hum.. if not that i have no clue. :thumb:

No, no blower.

I wish. But I don't think the tranny would handle the extra power.

It's coming from the passenger's side not driver's side. The pitch will go up as the revs go up.

My guess is that one of your accessory pulleys or acessories is making the whine. Try listening to them with a mechanics stehascope or a long metal rod/screwdriver to pinpoint where it's coming from.

Back in Michigan ... again.
Could be your freshly rebuilt alternator wasn't rebuilt properly. I had the exact same problem with a reman unit I put on my SHO. 20 miles later the thing would make this outrageous whining noise if the revs got much over 3k. The reman alternator was coming apart... I could grab the pulley and move it 1/8 inch in/out.

Spoke to the Mech today. told me that the Alt was rebuilt wrong, but that was not my issue. He told me it was the idler pulley. Told me it would be $103 from ford. Is that a reasonable price?

No. You can use the Gen III pulley or replace the bearing in the one you have. I think I paid $15 for my Gen III pulley and it works fine.

Too late, Mech already ordered the pully. If the forum hadn't have been down yesterday I'd have had him get one from a gen III . Oh well, now I know. The noise was getting pretty loud. What could have happened had I let it go? I ask in case anyone is just dealing with the noise rather than the fix.

Eventually the pulley could freeze, abd burn up the belt. Option 2 is that the pulley starts to wobble so bad, it throw's the belt off. In either case, it's bad. Don't feel too bad, my Mocha has the same problem right now. :nut:

I think I am experiencing the exact same problem. Engine sounds a little different, is running a little hotter and louder. I have been through a couple different ALT's with no change. Are you having any electrical issues? Let me know if changer this fixes the prob, thanks.
