Can I use either a 90 or a 120 amp alternator on a 93 ATX? Is it better to use the higher amp just to have more elec so things operate with less electrical"strain" as it were??
tks in advance for your expertise...

no, the atx cars only ever had one alternator. it mounts completely differently from the mtx alternator.

for the mtx cars, (which had the 90/120 variant) the mounting is enough different that they do not interchange. you need the correct front bracket for whichever alternator you want to use.

You don't choose. You have no choice.

89-93 MTX cars use a 90 amp alternator

94-95 MTX cars use a 130 amp Ford 3G alternator - NOT the same alternator case as ATX.

All ATX cars use a 130 amp Ford 3G alternator - NOT the same alternator case as MTX.

You can have a local shop custom build your alternator to a higher spec. Not too long ago, someone on this forum had this done, 200 amps IIRC.

I have found the 90 amp alternators to be more problem prone than the 130 amp model, in my personal experience. So much so, that I bought all the bracketry to convert the smaller unit to the 130 amp model. See http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=48847 for the details on that.
The strange thing is, from the day that the last of these parts arrived, I have not had one problem with my 90 amp unit, and it is still in place, and that was years ago.

It knew you were going to put it out to pasture, so it bucked up and refuses to fail or have problems while you are looking....just like a little kid11
