My friend is having trouble with his 92 mtx. It doesn't idle very well and sometimes it stalls on him when he pulls up to a stop sign. We pulled the codes and stored in continuous memory were 211, PIP circuit fault- 452, insufficient input from VSS- and 542, Fuel Pump Secondary circuit failure; ECA to ground. First of all, What is the PIP circuit exactly and how do you go about checking it? Second, what makes up the fuel pump secondary circuit? And last, where is the vss and where does it get input from?

The PIP sensor is the profile ignition pickup sensor and is more commonly known as the crankshaft position sensor (CPS or CKP). Failure of this sensor will shut the engine down hard and will not allow startup until the failure "resets". This is also the source of the secondary fuel pump fault - the engine stalled. The speed sensor is mounted on the speedometer cable output from the transmission and is apparently not providing the proper signal output.

The best source for the CPS: Wells SU242, AutoZone or AutoZone.com, $42.99+tax.

Thanks Scott. We just replaced the clutch so I bet I didn't get the plug on the transmission on all the way. I wish I would have known about the ckp sensor when we had it all apart! Oh well, just more practice I guess. How long is the car driveable this way? Is a few weeks gonna heart it if he babies it? Thanks again.

The crank sensor failures are probably heat and vibration induced. It may continue to fail intermittently for days, weeks or months, but then, it might fail completely tomorrow. Take your chances. Wells SU242, AutoZone/AutoZone.com, $42.99+tax.
