OK here's the latest engine status.

The engine harness is completed with the necessary mods for my application. Only have final wrapping to do which will wait until after I do a bench run of the engine.

Fuel rails and injectors are next, then the glorious intake manifold.
Can't wait!

I've managed to squeeze in some time to get the engine in its semi-final form. Purty eh? :omgsho:

With the engine harness and intake manifold on, the remaining items are minor in comparison. However, with a pending move to southern Arizona in the next six weeks, its not likely that I will get much more done until after that.

Here are a few things left to prepare for the bench run.

  • Rebuild A/C compressor and mount it.
  • Complete main harness and test it.
  • Locate and install used exhaust system (only used for bench test)
  • Fabricate engine/transaxle cradle.

I'll be takin a break for a while, so see ya once I find a place to park this project. Many thanks Tom!

Enjoy!

Gerard, The way you wrapped up your engine is not good. Not enough air circulation and clear plastic is a no-no for outside storage.

Tom,

I thought it was going to be in the enclosed area - out of the sun right? I also left the lower section open - there is a hand clamp on the stand post we can remove and that will open it up some more for air circulation.

Let me know if I need to come over and redo it. I can swing by next weekend.

Thanks,

Gerard

It'll be inside butwith the windows it will get some sunlight. I will find a canvass tarp to put over your plastic one.

Hey Tom,

Just an update on the relocation. After the mortgage company wasted a month of our time, I think we've found a suitable place. One great part is that it has an insulated garage with 12' ceiling. We're hoping to get the contract together this week, and shoot for a mid-late August close.

I hope everything is fine in Phoenix.

Just a quick update. The car is sitting, covered, outside the garage for the moment. I relocated to Benson, AZ back in May starting a new job, bought a new house in September and am still settling in.

Thanks to Tom for traliering the car & engine down to me.

On top of that my 924S is down for some new rings, so it will be a while before I get back to the teener. I'm going through withdrawal - anybody know of a clinic in these parts?

Enjoy!

Well the 914-SHO project is still alive. After months of working on cars for two sons (914 & 924S) I finally have the garage available for my 914.

Haven't worked on the engine since the move, but will start mocking up the cooling system. I need to identify the radiator requirements, coolant input/output hoses, etc, so I can determine how these integrate into the 914 body. This has to be decided before I complete my body stiffening.

Where in Benson are you located? Benson proper or the 90/10 area?

I somehow missed seeing this project before today, but it looks interesting.

Sorry for the vagueness. Thought I'd keep this posting as a kinda progress thread, and posted the questions elsewhere. Thanks for connecting the dots, Tom.

Bruso, I'm in Benson - actually NE slightly, but it's all the same. Can't beat country living. And aside from the people, the only thing I miss from the city is all the paved roads to drive on. We get over to SV quite often - prefer it over Tucson.

Well, if you need parts or tools I'm in the area. Been playing with SHOs since about '97 and I have a few spares. Not quite as much as what Tom has at his place, though :)

Sounds like you need to come and buy all my SHO stuff and complete your collection.

If only I had the space. Working in either of my sheds starts and ends with a game of Tetris :)

I'm not sure I can even fit the parts I'm still working on pulling from the white car in my carport.

Though I could probably arrange storage of The Other Woman for a bit...

Well I'll keep you both in mind. I hope to get the remaining engine parts all together before the end of the year. That's the plan anyway. Hard to believe its already November.

Enjoy.

I Spent some time working on the first mockup for the mini-radiators. These are 11x14.38x2" dual-core, with fans mounted on the back side. In this configuration they would mount on the engine bar with a floating frame. This way the engine and radiators would be removed together when dropping the engine out for service.

Post 1191 1320895874

From the side you can see that the exhaust will drop down near the back third of the radiator. The exhaust manifold has heat shields added to it since on the stock config one manifold is less than an inch from the radiator fan.

Post 1191 1320895890

From the back, the radiators will sit just inside the motor mount frame with plenty of clearance for exhaust pipes.

I'm beginning to like this approach, especially if I can tie them to the motor mount bar. I would replace the caps on these with a fitting to connect to either a single or two separate fill bottles that would be mounted high near the engine lid. It should make getting air out of the system much easier.
