HooRa! Got oil pressure. Just finished spinning up the SHO motor to test oil pressure before starting it the first time (next Saturday).

Using the stock instrument cluster simplified things. With power on I got Oil, Batt, and Check Eng lights. Once I started the motor, all went out except oil pressure. About 45 seconds later - oil pressure went out. Gotta love it when things work.

Here's the video.

3d914, is the SHO engine going into the Porsche facing forwards or backwards?

benabelly, for a longitudinally placed engine, it will be facing forward. Since the 914 is a mid-engine it will sit behind the passenger compartment. Here's a CAD rendering I did previously.

Thanks. I might have some questions for you about dimensions. Maybe I'll PM them so it doesn't clutter up the thread.

benabelly, this will give you something to work from. Here are my dimensions taken off the 3.2L engine when it was apart. The one difference is the width across the heads. I measured across the middle so you have to add one inch for each side where the heads bulge at the back.

Feel free to PM me for more details.

Well we had a nice gathering for the "Get the SHO Started - Take 1". Here's some of the cool vehicles that showed up.

OK, now for the event details. Let's just say we had partial success. The motor started, fuel pump & relays all worked, tach signal was good, etc.

Here's the video.

There was some bad news though. Something in the wiring caused the PCM to go into limp-home mode - permanently. We weren't able to even pull codes on it. We tried a second PCM and got the same thing.

Thanks to bruso we were able to plug the second PCM in and get codes before we tried the second start. Here's what we got: 26, 51, 95, & 65.
  • 26 - MAF (out of range)
  • 51 - ECT (signal too high)
  • 95 - FP ground circuit (Fuel pump: open, bad ground or always on; bad fp ground or open between fp and pin 8 at PCM)
  • 65 - Check intermittent HO2S (signal or ground)

Also had high fuel pressure, but I need to do a little research before I can comment on that.

So now it looks like I'll be retracing all the wiring (again) to find the issue. Keep ya posted.

Awesome got it running. It took 2 times for me. I forgot to reinstall the wire at the starter.
Now on fuel pressure.
Is fuel flow in correct direction? I came real close on fouling that up. Pressure goes into rail and regulator lets fuel out return line.
No kinks, block and big enough return line?
Vac line on regulator and it is not kinked or blocked?
Last is regulator maybe bad.
On your codes. This one I used. I even checked my Haynes code book.
this site has better ideas.

26 you know.
51 ECT sensor, Can ohm out from computer and wire back
65 bad signal or ground H02s sensor
95 Fuel pump always on or off [not the last one] didn't get signal on
On test these items. Here is how to test them

It didn't list or I missed it on test MAF I will try to find. Maurice

Good on flow, return, & direction. Pressure was on the high side & I'm using aftermarket FP:
Walbro Part Number: GCL601
Minimum Current: 12 Volts
Operating Pressure: 45 PSI
Minimum Flow @ Outlet: 32 GPH (121 LPH) High Pressure

Vacuum line is new but didn't check for vacuum while it was running. It'll have to wait till I get some replacement PCMs.

After watching the video, it's obvious that the problem is that ugly assistant you have. Get a better looking assistant and the motor will purr like a well oiled kitten.:laugh_ti:

Seriously though; 45 psi at the rail while running is a tad high; is probably due to your rail mounted fuel pressure regulator being dry for so long. Get an aftermarket one with a gauge.

Limp home mode is activated when a critical sensor goes out of range.

Tom, does the fuel system have a check-valve in it? I'm using the Walbro GCL601 FP.

Limp home mode is activated when a critical sensor goes out of range.

That would fit the codes we got. However, afterward we couldn't access the PCM diagnostics. Any thoughts?

TIA.

Most in-tank pumps do not have a check valve in them, however the return line usually has a rubber "duck bill" on the end in the tank to keep fuel in the line untill it is turned on again.

The pressure regulator on the rail pinches off the return line according to how much vacuum is presented to it by that hose that goes to the front plenum. Make sure you are getting full manifold vacuum; sometimes the tube gets clogged up with carbon deposits.

I'm not up on which sensors are the critical ones, but I would assume the two temp sensors, IAT and Coolant Temp sensor would be a good place to start. You can test both of those in a *** of water with a turkey thermometer and VOM, brought to a slow boil. Do them separately because the IAT will respond much quicker than the ECT sensor.
