Thanks to rbruso for the ground cable - and he helped locate the ignition capacitor. Also located good spots for the engine ground and mount locations for wire hangers while its on the engine cradle.

Now its just a matter of puttin all the pieces together. Almost finished with the temp bracket for the PCM and I'll be able to mount that.

Got plenty done today. Built some brackets to support the component harness. One also provides a mounting place for the IMRC. I'll need to extend that wiring for its connector, but I'm gonna need to do that for final install anyhoo.

Also took care of one of the main grounds in harness - one to the engine block & one to the cradle frame. You can barely see the connector on the PS bracket in the lower-left.

I'm thinking I'll do one more bracket that extends back and up so that I can drop straight down for the various relays - since that's where the CCRM connector is at. I'll be cutting this one off - anyone need it?

Also built me a mount for the PCM up front. There are a couple of open loops in the back and I'll use a small bungie cord to hold it. All my small cords disappeared somewhere.

Got the fuel lines connected up. One will just run from the the FP into a gas can, and of course the return will run directly into the can.

I finished my instrument panel yesterday. It's just tac-welded on back for the moment. I plan to drill holes to mount it to the angle then grind off the welds. Got a SHO tach sourced and need to start locating an ignition switch and some idiot lights for oil pressure, hi & low speed cooling fans. I'll also use two separate switches for BOO & Clutch position.

Almost forgot I mounted the main power distribution box (lower-right) as well. I'm using nine of the SHO's stock 12 fuses. One 40amp will power the 914's internal fuse/relay panel.

Just continued connecting wires between the MTX component harness and the ATX engine harness. I'll have a few connections I'm sure before I'm done. Should get my relays in this next week, so next weekend I can focus on the temp relay panel and all its connections.

Well finally got the patches on the right side of the engine bay done. Had some time last weekend to fit & spot weld this patch in. Got around to finishing off the welding & grinding tonight.

Piece was a pain in the a$$ to fit because of bends and contour, but a close fit makes the finish welding so much easier.

I know the feeling. Got one up in WY and another in grad school in IN. Just the baby left and she's a senior in HS. I sure wouldn't mind change places though. Gettin to study new things, work a little, 3 meals a day & no other worries. Parents just don't get paid enough. ; )

Not real progress, but progress of a sort. Decided to move the 914-SHO out of the garage for the weekend. Let's me clean up the garage some - so much metal dust & dirt collecting.

The teener will get dusted off, and also have some primer to shoot on the repairs. Now that the rain has stopped for a while seemed like good timing.

Also gives me chance to clean the cobwebs off my son's 914, roll it in and get the engine installed this weekend. Won't probably get it running till later in the week, but gettin the engine/tranny in is the first big step.

Nothing special this weekend. Got the son's 914 running during the week. I had a little time this weekend to continue on wiring for the bench test. Still waiting to get the switches and misc gauges I need. Picked up a nice instrument cluster from rbruso - thanks! I'm actually going to see if I can use more of the cluster. It's a very close fit to the stock 914.

I've decided not to tear it apart just for the tach, but I'll find a way to mount the whole cluster and connect to just the tach. Maybe use a couple of idiot lights and the CEL light.

Continuing to work on the wiring for bench testing the SHO motor. Identified most the switches & gauges I want to use. Now just need to save up and order them.

Spent the weekend finishing up the wiring. Got everything hooked up except the battery positive, related fusable links, and the ignition switch. Been a challenge finding a multi-deck, 3-position ignition switch to mount on the stand.

Decided to use the SHO instrument panel as-is which saved worrying about other gauges/senders. Looks funny, but it will work fine.

OK, I think I figured out how to deal with the ignition switch after reviewing schematics for the 914 & SHO. Here's a schematic I drew up to handle my minimum requirements. There are two separate input circuits and two separate conditions for the start/run circuit for each. This is why I needed a two-deck rotary switch.

Post 1191 1352508744

The more I studied it and looked at various switches in catalogs, it dawned on me that I can replicate these circuits with two separate toggle switches. One DPST to handle the two input circuits, and one SPST momentary switch to provide the start function. It turns out this can serve the role of the clutch position switch also.

This will take care of the engine bench test, but I'll still need to take apart a stock switch to build a schematic of it so I can use it when engine is installed.

Got the hose for the PSP yesterday. And the ignition switches I needed cam in - so hope to get this finished up and ready to test this weekend.

I'll post an invite if anyone's interested in coming out to SE AZ for some SHO fun to see if this thing runs.

ENjoy your Thanksgiving!

OK, well I'm finally at the point where I can begin some of the pretests (next weekend). Just waiting on a cap & T to close off the PSP and I'll be ready to turn it over.

I need to set a date for this so I can get a couple of guys down here to look over my shoulder. Not sure why I'm so nervous about starting this thing - just don't want to fry circuits or PCM. Here's some pics.

Left side with battery, starter, and fusible links.

Right side with wiring harness and relays (LL).

Thanks guys - I can use the encouragement. I work much better when I can collaborate with others. This site and others helps a lot - but in-person collaborating is much faster.
