90 SHO Blend Door Actuator Replacement

It is now official that the blend door actuator has failed on my beloved, but seldom driven 90 SHO. I did find a new actuator and may attempt the installation sometime this summer. Too many other car projects and home projects going on right now to bother with it. One the plus side, the heater works great, which is a nice thing with as cold as it is.

Has anyone had any success with just installing an inline heater shut off valve? It seems like a lame way to fix the problem, but it should shut off the supply of hot water going to the heater core.

I had successful results doing that on other makes/models in the past. Consider installing a valve on both the in/out hoses with a bypass hose before the valves. This will allow coolant to circulate through the lines and relieve any adverse pressure increase on the pump/system, however small that amount might be. Two ‘T’ connectors with built in redirecting valves would be ideal. Other than the ‘T’ connectors a short piece of bulk heater hose and six hose clamps will be all you need.....

Thanks and I may just do something like this. Every time I look at the dash on that car, I find another reason to not take on this project and consider looking for a simple was around the problem. With warmer weather coming in this desert in a couple of month, I think the a/c is much more important than the heater.

The good news is that the replacement procedure is manageable with the page by page how to that is on the forum (and shophoenix) I have a hard copy that I can scan to you if you need it. It's written for a gen2 but I would expect it to be simpler for a gen 1 as there is less dash to deal with.

Thanks for the offer and yes I would be interested in any instructions that I can get on this project. I just have to find the time and energy to take on this project. Right now I am working on detailing the brand X 05 GTO for a get together in Laughlin this coming weekend. After that the SHO might get some attention. I think I might have too many cars.

As far as I can tell, the vent selection mode in the car works fine. This temperature control problem has been an intermittent problem in this car for years. When I ran the test on the system, it came back with the "02" code, which indicates a blend door actuator failure. I have plenty of heat, but no air conditioned air. I can only go by what I have read and heard about how that part fails on these cars. Most of the stuff I have still has plain old cables that operate the temperature. Not real high tech, but simple and not very failure prone.
