You should just find a nice aftermarket racing wheel. The fr500 is made for those that want a thicker grip but want to keep their airbag intact. I would keep the 89 wheel though, I think it looks nice and is unique to that year.

Sorry bub, haven't tried that particular wheel but mebbe I should look into it as using a pair of vise grips for a steering wheel is getting kinda old.

LMK how you make out huh?

Let me know, how you make out. I'm in the market for a wheel myself, and am curious how that swap goes for you. Comprende?

i think i am just going to go with another 89 wheel, but when i was messing with my 95 steering wheel i noticed that a 16mm socket fits perfect on the 89 steering shaft. it wouldnt take much the drill out the hole in the 95 wheel and weld the socket in the middle of it, but that was just an idea.

That sounds like a terrible, and unsafe idea in the event of an accident. Those welds would break, and you could impale yourself on the steering shaft.

Are you sure the '95 wheel you have is from a taurus? If so, to make it work, the steering shaft may have to be changed. With the number of Taurus' around, you should be able to find one.

Visegrips are workin' fine for me, a bit tough on the wrists but WTH? Put another '89 wheel on there and let her rip.

89's have a steering shaft shaped like a octagon, a 16mm socket fits on it perfect. in 1990 when ford went to airbags they changed the shaft to a round one with 2 flat sides.

just wondering but why not change the whole steering column?
its actually not that hard you got a total of 9 nuts 1 bolt and the 4 bolts on the column plate cover thing.
unless you count the bolt holding the ignition plug in then add 1 :)
