Anyone ever drop something down the oil return hole in the head? HOw far down the block does the hole stay the same size, or does it just go straight to the pan? I dropped the shim bucket holder tool and think it went in there, can't find it anywhere.
Helppppppppp.

I believe it goes straight down to the pan. I think the diameter stays the same also. I dropped something down there as well. I pulled the pan though. It's a real PITA but why risk the motor to be lazy? Happy wrenching. And in the future cover the holes and pass the advise along to others.

Following my own advise: use a torque wrench on the valve cover bolts. I busted more than one and the extra work and search for another weird shaped one isn't worth cuttting corners.

try getting a real strong magnet, attach it securely to a piece of coat hanger and go fishing through the oil pan drain plug hole. Maybe you'll get lucky. BTW, is the shim holder metal?
