Has any one put 6x9's into there Gen 1 SHO's? Is it possible while still keeping the original grills/covers?

I have them and no they will not fit with the original grills and covers. If you want to keep the original grills and covers buy 5X7's. They fit perfectly.

6X9s will fit underneath the package tray. You can see how when you look under there. Crutchfield had the little brackets to make it easy, but you don't have to have them. I left my covers on the inside and removed the speakers. The 6X9s sound much better, IMHO

Do you happen to know what the part # for the brackets is? Or a better description?

Don't remember the part number, they sent them with the speakers. If you look on the bottom of the package tray you will see the cut outs for the 6X9s. The JBL systems used 6X9s underneath the "high-mounted" 5X7s as sub-woofers(Gen I). You will also notice 4 little "squares" cut into the sheet metal that look like something is supposed to slide in there. Something is. It's the bolts to hold the speakers in. The bolts simply had big(though thin) square heads on them. The heads slide in the "squares" and the speakers slide over them. Tighten up the nuts and there you go. I would think any stereo installation shop would have them. Or something close enough.
