Just curious...

I just completed the t-belt, crank seal, waterpump portion of the 60K and the car is running fine. When I had it apart though, I noticed there were three different markings on the lower cover; a vertical line "|" and then two different "O" marks. At the point where the mark on the crank pulley was at 12 o'clock it lined up with the "|" mark on the lower belt cover, but the cams were a tooth or two before TDC (my timing belt markings were perfectly aligned with the marks on the housing at this point so I left it here).

The point behind all of this is: which marking was I supposed to be aiming to align the crank with? Is it possible that, despite the fact that the car is running well it might be running better with the cams a tooth or two ahead of their current position?

If the line on the crank is supposed to be at 5 o'clock then why are there markings on top section of the lower belt cover between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock?

There may be some terminology semantics here........once the damper is off, there is a punch mark on the crank pulley. This will be at 5 o'clock; it will line up with a ridge on the lower front cover. OTOH, I don't think it would run too well if it was even a tooth off, anyone have any experience with that?

The marks on the lower timing belt cover are "10" and "0" and they refer to the degrees before top dead center (BTDC) on the number one cylinder. When you line the white mark on the crankshaft damper up to the "0" mark the number one cylinder is at TDC. When the first, yellow mark on the crank damper is at the "0" mark, the timing is set to 60 degrees BTDC. This mark is useful only to the MTX to set the timing belt tension.

Upper timing belt alignment - index marks on cam sprocket teeth in line with white marks on belt and lines on back timing belt cover.

Lower timing belt alignment - index mark on sprocket in line with white mark on belt and ridge on oil pan shelf at very bottom of the picture.

Thanks Scott (once again you came through with pictures...)

I just wanted to clarify for anyone else who was thinking about taking this on for the first time. I was looking at the mark on the crank pulley and not the index mark stamped into the cam sprocket. I was able to use the pulley as a reference to get everything back together since unfortunately for me, the lines on my old timing belt weren't where they should be.
