Someone please tell me about the camshaft problem that I've been hearing about on the 3rd gens.

If it is as bad as it is proported to be then I may have to consider selling my baby. :-(

Any info is appreciated.

ok. is it just me, or wouldn't it take more than just four spot welds to fix this....even these four welds alone would require a rebalance of the chaft would they not???or is it o.k. because it's the cam????

I think I have had this problem dealing with the cam sprocket. One day I heard an overly loud ticking sound coming from the rear cylinder bank. I thought nothing of it and planned on having it looked at. Two days later I was driving it and it stalled out and would not start. A friend of mine has the car right now and is fixing it as we speak. The diagnosis is that I need a new timing belt, I dropped two valves and spun two camshaft bearings. The whole thing will cost me $1100 and I hope to have it this week before Xmas. Ford initially said it was some sort of damage to the head and they wanted an outrageous amount to fix it. They would not get my money.

All good information folks. Keep it coming.

Where is the number of failures documented? (I didn't see it on that V8SHO page, although I was only there for a few minutes.)

I have 58,000 miles on a 97 V-8 now. It's not abused (It's mint actually), but this is obviously a major concern for me. I work in the tech industry where $$$ is not as plentiful as it once was and a failure would be bad. (Esp. since I just replaced a tranny!)

(Just trying to make an informed decision here.)

Thanks again,
driven

From everything I have been able to determine, the problem, while real, is far from common or certain. There is almost no information available on how the under 100 examples of the failure had been treated and driven prior to the failure. And Ford appears to now be aware of a potential problem but has as yet not seen enough on the failures to issue a TSB on it. However, if you have a good dealership, it seems they can fairly easily convince Ford to pay for part of a very major repair after things have broken. The trick at the moment is to get them to pay for a much smaller repair before anything breaks. People are still working on that (including me).

From what I have managed to find out, mig or tig welds for each sprocket will not cause any balance problems for the cam, just as the shims do not. However, my favorite engine guy says he would rather put on 3 spots on each sproket, rather than just one, and space them at 120 degrees. This is only a touch more difficult, requiring hand cranking the motor position instead of using only the location that happens to be up when you get everything exposed.

So, I think we should all keep up with events and those of us trying to get something going with Ford keep at it, but otherwise tone down the worry level a bit. Worth looking into. Worth fixing. But not worth selling the car about.

Thanks again. I'll keep an eye open here. (And I might run it by my mechanic at Ford too so that he can keep his eyes peeled.)
