Hey guys, I've heard that third gear is kinda the worst for our mtx trannies. I was just curious if any of you had any advice on the fastest way to somewhat safely shift into third gear. Does the slamming the shifter into 3rd hurt it, or is it how fast you let the clutch out? My tranny seems to be in great condition, and after this 3.2 swap which is almost done, I really can't afford a new tranny. Any info is appreciated.

Powershifting into 3rd is bad. Just make sure your IN GEAR before you release the clutch and you should be all right. Sure, shifting hard into third might get you a little churp out of the tires but its not worth it when your clutch starts slippin'

When he says slamming, I think he means throwing into third as quick as he can. I see nothing wrong with this as long as you are completely in third before you let the clutch out. With the cable shifters especially I find my self having to show it "whos man" by throwing it into gear as quickly as I can before I loose the gate and end up in la la land.

Ok, what you guys said makes a lot of sense. Just to clear up any confusion, I don't get any 3rd gear chirps. I don't even know if thats possible. Maybe if you had a lot of mods, or bald tires or something. Well, thanks again guys.

Forcing the shifter quickly into any gear will cause accelerated wear of the blocking rings and if grinding occurs, also the synchronizers. Save the quick shifts for when you really need them.

Third gear failure is usually only a problem for the boosted cars. If you pop the clutch at every shift, you may make it your problem too. The SHO MTX is a solid chunk of gears, but repeated abuse will take a toll. If you have ever had to remove, repair and replace the clutch or MTX on a SHO, you would think twice about it before jamming gears and popping clutches. Treat it like you paid for it. Or did you?

Yeah, I paid for it. I really don't even rod on it very much. I just thought it would be a good question to ask and see what people had to say. Thanks for all the advice guys.

So maybe the smaller size of 3rd gear is why a lot of our MTXs slightly whine in 3rd?

For those that have blown 3rd, did you have a lot of whining from that gear before it broke? If you did hear some whining, did it blow soon afterwards?

Just curious, as maybe a loud 3rd gear whine is a symptom of an impending 3rd gear failure... shrug

My 3rd gear whines a bit too and the engine & tranny only have 73,000 original miles on them. My 2nd gear grinds a little bit when the tranny's cold but it's ok once it warms up. I put Mobil1 ATF in there which did help the grind a lot but it's still there when the fluid is cold. I always heard that a transmission-whine often times meant worn syncros. Is there any truth to that?

holly old post

These tranny make a lot of noise, whining is normal (within reason).

Just be sure to keep the fluid topped off, and avoid slapping gears or burnouts, and the tranny will last a long time.
