If I was you I wouldn't drive it till I fixed it. I have yet to break one, but the guys who have, have usually sheered off a couple of teeth off 3rd gear. You don't want to ruin the rest of the tranny by debris flying around.
3rd gear is on the main shaft, it is engaged by the input shaft. Usually the input shaft doesn't let go with it, but I think at least 1 person has sheered some teeth off 3rd with damage to the input shaft. Either way, you'll want to inspect it.
Getting a 3rd gear made with some high zoot material is an option, although it will probably be expensive due to the lack of volume. To get any buying power we'd have to get a lot of us together and approach a manufacturer. With proper heath treating and some voo-doo material, you could probably increase the strength. It's a very narrow gear though.
