Ideally, you should have the connecting rods resized...

usually kind of expensive isnt it?

You must re-use the thrust bearings. You cannot find new one's.
I hope you numbered the connecting rods and caps. Everything must go back to there origional spot.

Will keep the thrust bearings :) yea i put them in the same order they were taken out.

For resizing, flash grinding, polish, shot peening and new bushings pressed in and reamed out was $280 for all six of mine. If you just do the resizing, it's probably not much... However, I'm sure it's MUCH cheaper than a spun rod bearing.

3.0 runs great, other then being a little down on power. Ive gotten atleast 2 or 3 "erratic spark signal" from the code reader, i'm pretty sure its the CPS. The reason i got the 3.2 was the price, something to do over the winter even if it doesn't work out, and for my old man who hurt his back, he really likes playing with it, gives him something to do. 3.2, 3.0 cams, y-pipe and a 75 shot are my goals, pretty reasonable IMO. I didn't wanna mod my 3.0 when i feel like its lacking as is. Thanks for all the help guys.

It's because of the chemicals that they had to use when they just vat the block as opposed to the newer style high pressure washer style. The caustic soda that they used in the old style tanks needed a permit from God and as you know, He doesn't give those out to just any old shop.

Back when I was into VW's I made my own version of a hot tank using garage floor cleaner dissolved in water that was then set to boil on a Coleman camp stove. Boy did it work great. Took absolutely everything off of steel. Couldn't use it on aluminum though, too harsh.

Tom

You can still get a block hot tanked here in good old Tulsa Oklahoma.

Dont Forget to try calling 4th street machine shop and/or Miller hill auto machine, when I wanted to get the neon head port and polished they only quoted me at like 40 dollars do I bet they are pretty reasonable. Also like I said for me when I got the 2.8 from the blazer done to get a valve job done on both heads I think only cost like 75 bucks so that might be worth doing too, like you said you got a lot of time and the actual machine work you need on it shouldnt cost more than about 200-300 bucks, depending on what you want to get done. Personally I think you should get the Valve job done (which includes valve stem seals) and get the heads gasket matched, and they can at least clean your intake for you. I might get yelled at for my comments on here though, as brett knows (this is Brett's bro) im the neon Afficianado, not the SHO guy, but we have raced my 3.0 Duratec Fusion against his and he still beats me, not by much so can't wait to see that 3.2 in. Brett when you coming down to Kansas City ***.

Well, guess what? the rod caps, and the pistons/rods have lost the order in, someone goofing around in the garage didn't know that they were in a particular order and went ahead and moved them. :smash: i know for sure that they didnt put them back in the order they were found, so now im at square one. Is there ANY way to tell in which order they came out? Because the order was lost i called a couple machine shops to see what they'd charge to clean everything up and put the rolling assembly back together. Most of the shops said they just straight wouldn't do it. One shop said they would but only if i ordered new pistons... they quoted me at 1400 dollars just for that, because the pistons are (spendy). This really isn't an option, i dont have 1400 dollars just to get the rolling assembly back together, im really feeling in over my head, i have only spent about 350 all together, 250 for the motor and 120 for the piston rings, so i wouldnt be out a huge loss but... i really want a 3.2 zex'd SHO!

Pistons & rods!

Brett, it doesn't matter. The piston and rods are all factory balanced and can go in any hole. The only thing is when you install the piston assembly face the arrow forward. Oh and put the rod cap on with the small *** facing forward as well ( the same direction as you took it off). Im building a 3.2 to install into Jeremaihs 94 MTX Mark

ya its one thing to put them in a different order if nothing is getting machined, but since you are getting everything machined etc. it really doesnt matter as he said as long as they are facing the right way and your getting new bearings you should be fine.

Machine shop was able to match up the rod caps. cost me 20 bucks. Block is being hot tanked, de glazed and honed right now. Machinist said something about the hone needing to be a bit ruffer because i have the chrome piston rings(hastings)? Either way, still moving along. :thumb:

If you haven't cleaned anything yet, you will be able to tell which cap is which. Just install it on a main journal and see if the "darkened by oil" lines match.
