I have just installed a tune from Unleashed tune in Florida. The results from stock are significant. The tune came in 3 steps--A timing and fuel curve , a shift modification and finally a increase in boost. Gut feel from modifying cars for many years is at least 1 second increase from stock in the 1/4 mile ET.

Torrie the owner of Unleashed is very easy to deal with, unlike some of my local experts. I would highly recommend his work and be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

I'm still curious as if a tune will leave a "footprint" on the cars cpu letting anyone who works on it, i.e the dealer, know it had been tuned even if the tune has been removed. I've heard all sorts of different rumors to this now, and even ways of "erasing" it off if it were stuck on there. I have a spare SCT tuner with me right now and it's driving me nuts just sitting here being unused. I'm awaiting the response from one of the head SCT guys now to see if it puts it "mark" on it.

just be sure to check your timing, my car was set at 28 degrees with the tune that was on my car, and one motor already went pop,

verify, verify, verify

Yes. 100% without a doubt, it leaves a footprint in the PCM. Even if you bought a new PCM and had it reflashed, your VIN will be red-tagged through Ford.

I finally heard back from my tuner. Yeah, it'll throw a P1000 code but once you drive it for a bit, it'll go away. Problem would occur if the motor blew and you had to return it back to stock. There would be no way of driving the car to make the code go away if the motor was DOA. I can't imagine a tune right off the bat, say from an over the counter programmer like SCT hurting the motor though. I figure doing a dyno tune "tweaking" with the tuner is when damage can occur.

I am not sure that a mail order tune where they never see your car is safer than a safe tune done by a pro on a dyno.

On another note my MKS is so soft and lazy on the shifts that it is driving me crazy. The amount of torque managment is over the top, is anyone doing a decent trans tune?

Is that Torrie from Fast Parts Network? If so, he is great in the customer service department.

There are literally over 50 parameters just dealing with torque management on these cars. I think it might be a little while before someone really gets the tuning down in these cars.

I read a Ford Bulletin on the SVT Performance forum essentially telling service departments to look out for tunes and aftermarket parts for EcoBoost owners.

I'm curious as to how in depth some of these different tuning methods are and what exactly they specifically do or don't do (raise boost, adjust A/F and timing, remove/raise top speed limiter, adjust trans shifting and torque management)? IMHO, you will always get a more thorough, better tune by dyno tuning by a knowledeable person, but can also cause major headaches performed by the uninformed. Sometimes a simple flash tune can get you a nice, safe boost in performance.

Speaking of top speed limiter, I wonder what the speedometer will do on these models if they go past the posted 140MPH? I would have thought at least 160MPH speedo would be in order, at least for "SHO" (pun intended ;) ).

Yep.

it's this way in the Subaru world. The Cobb tunes are conservative and well-done. Other guys knock them whern they get better #s from a tuner, but the sacrifice has to be made somewhere.

i dont have a gen 4 so i dont follow the tuning threads much as i should but i know GM has a factory upgrade tune for their 2.0L turbo in the cobalt ss, pontiac soltice, etc. It doesnt void the factory warrenty because GM is the one providing the new tune.

IDK if ford has anything like this in the works but it would be smart on their part to jump on this ship and try to claim some of the performance market?

The P1000 code is nothing. That just comes from disconnecting the battery. They would have to look for a special flag if there is one enabled, or read the tables to see how they differ from OEM. I would assume that there is a special bit somewhere to count flashes. I don't know if it is enabled.

The dealer cannot void the warranty, Ford can but has to prove what is damaged was caused by the change, theoretically. But Ford has bigger lawyers than you.

Any emission changes would void the warranty and be illegal of course.

I have e-mailed a person from modluar depot whitch I asked him

I am e-mailing again because I want to know the samthing about the "footprint" in the computer. Can this happen as someone was talking about the SHO form I attach a screen shot.

and he told me

Kevin,

From what I know Ford can tell it’s had a tune on it, but it would be difficult for them to find out. They would most likely have to bring in a computer engineer.
