That's exactly what happened and it's inexcusable of Ford to design such a ****** part. The differential oil was like tar and it sprayed all underneath the car making a huge mess. it must have happened on the highway because only a few drops were left on the driveway as an indication of the failure. the tech had to use brake cleaner just to get the crap off of the work area. But what could I do, spend 5.5 hours labor cost to change the ******* oil? F&cking Ford engineers. Seriously. What kind of ******* puts in an oil reservoir for a key drivetrain component with no way to renew the oil? Some ******* pencil pushing manager with an MBA who has never gotten his manicured fingers dirty. I accept what you guys said, that 150k is reasonable. I'm fine with that. It's the engineering that is inexcusable. But in the end, the cost wasn't terrible. This wasn't transmission caliber.

Cars are disposable. Buy a new one every 3 years. All of our company vehicles are automatically exchanged near 100k or 3 years whichever happens first. Just like cell phones.

I'm sure the carmakers love people like you. For the rest of us who live in the real world, that's not an option.

They love investors, shareholders, board members.....
I've toured a few plants and every manufacturer has nonservicable parts. Maintenance would actually be replacing parts like the PTU at common failure mileage based on usage.

And this actually carries forward through most industries. Serviceable parts usually cost more and also increase downtime in most cases.

I'm not against it but I have worked around it and asked enough questions to know why it's common.

It doesn’t take five and a half hours to service the PTU. Even without a drain plug, and a slow pump, it shouldn’t take more than an hour or two.

The problem is most people don't have the means to service equipment....nor the brains.

Yeah that sounds pretty nuts. I paid 75$ to have a shop suck the old fluid out and replace with new fluid. That was my old PTU without the drain plug.
