Recently got an oil change and basically drive it home. Drove my kids to school and when I picked them up there was missfire and white smoke from the right side tail pipe.

I made sure to buy a warranty when I got the car, so I'm not too worried.

But, anybody have any ideas? Reading a similar thread I heard maybe rear turbo. The shop can't get it in any sooner than next wed.

After it ran for maybe 30 seconds, this was coming out the right pipe only.

Oil is clear and coolant looks normal. Normal levels on bothAdd6af7678c9e1c05c56178721fa8015

Have you pulled error codes?

If it reaks of gasoline my guess would be faulty injector. Mine had a constant misfire, smoke out of the exhaust and a very strong odor of gas.

Right side tail pipe smoke only (mostly)?

Rear turbo. Rebuild or replace.

I didn't let it keep running to double check, but the 2 times I've had it going it pretty much seemed just the right side. Definitely MOSTLY. No codes popped up yet.

Soooo...I get new turbo?

Not so fast. Lol. I see you said it was misfiring. So on your next chance to witness this magic 'smoke', go to the back of the vehicle, Does it smell like like burnt oil or rubber? Or does it smell a bit sweet-ish? Grab the vapors with your hand. Rub it between you fingers. Is it a bit oily or is it similar to steam? Check/rub the residue on the tail pipe. Is it a heavy sooty oil film, or is it just some soot?

I’d check injectors. Especially if it smells like fuel. With the misfire it’s leading me towards that. Especially if the misfire is on that bank. I just went through that ordeal with my ‘14 except that both rear injectors failed so thick white smoke was spewing out, smelled of fuel from exhaust, misfire, and low rail pressure. Pulled the plugs and ran my borescope down into each cylinder (3/6) and with KOEO fuel was steadily dumping into the cylinder.

Fortunately I bought this car with an extended warranty, so anything that's wrong should be covered. Most I'll be out is like $100 worst case.

I'll try and take a sniff when I have the tow come.

Hopefully parts aren't days/weeks out when they get it figured out and have her back purring fast

And the winner is................bad injector. One is stuck wide open

Glad you got it figured out! I’d say to replace all 6 while you’re in there but warranty is covering it so doubt they’ll do that.

That's what I was thinking. They already recommended plugs while in there and I'm sure it could use them. Would probably be basic preventive maintenance in the eyes of the warranty company.

Worst case they said .7 hrs and plugs that I would owe.

We'll see what the warranty company says tomorrow

Oil change too. If they don't do that, do it immediately after you get car back.
That's on their list of to dos with the injector. He mentioned it.

What ****** me off is I literally just had the oil changed! Like 40-50 miles, including 34 just back from the dealership. I basically went home and drove my kids to/from school once

That sucks, but not nearly as bad as replacing the motor a month or two down the road.

Welp...the warranty won't cover "everything" I'm told.

After all this and they won't cover it. A $7 filter, those bastards are going to bleed me dry!

So, basically everything is going to be covered and they recommend the plugs since it's almost time. I've felt a slight rough idle here and there, so need the plugs anyway.

$160 for the plugs and maybe the $70 diagnostic is all that'll be due when I pick her up.

That’s way better than paying the whole job with parts! Hopefully the other 5 injectors will last. Depending on how much fuel was dumped into that cylinder and how long it sat it wouldn’t hurt to do them to put some oil down that cylinder to coat the portion of the wall that’s furthest from the centerline. I did that for both of mine after seeing how much fuel was being dumped and didn’t want to risk the rings being in contact with the bore without any lubrication. Just a suggestion. I’ve built enough engines to no that’s a huge no no.

No, you’ll be surprised how much fuel was being dumped. When I took a borescope to mine to inspect there was enough to convert the top of the piston and it just sat there until it made its way past the compression rings and oil rings. That fuel will wash that cylinder wall down which will then leave your piston and cylinder bore (outboard side) dry and that’s a huge no no for metal to metal contact.

Got it back from the shop to find out I was right...my battery lost a cell right when this happened. I was hoping it was just dead from sitting too much. Nope. She's definitely lost a cell.

Gotta jump her till I get a new battery.

Anybody have any insight on a larger battery? I was going to upgrade it somewhat soon anyway because I have a few amps I need to install.

I'm not against modifying my battery box.

I highly recommend the Odyssey as a top choice. Especially if you live where you have deep winters or high summers.

No batt box mod needed.
