I might buy a 1st gen SHO with a little over 100k miles. The price is right, but the transmission is out (5 speed). What can I expect to pay to have it rebuilt? Any place that sells them used/rebuilt?

Thanks :)

First you have to determine the nature of the failure -- if there is a hole in the tranny case due to catastrophic differential failure, the tranny is not repairable (cost effectively).

Presuming there are no holes, you have a few options: rebuild it yourself, buy a rebuilt from Ford, or buy a rebuilt from SHO Shop or FPS.

If you just want to find a used one, just start calling junkyards.

I just finished rebuilding my transmission and installing a quife differential today. You may want to do it your self, it is not that hard to do. Get the quife install video from Josh at ShoNut. Even if you donot insatall the quife, the video covers how to do a complete rebuild, including the original diff.

I will be posting some photos tomorrow on how the rebuild went. There is nothing very hard about it, if you have any mechanincal skills.

Josh will rent you the tools and give you technical support.

I'll vouch for the helpfulness of the SHO NUT MTX video. I just watched it this morning and replaced all of the blocking rings and seals in the transaxle. It was very beneficial to see the process before opening up the transaxle. You can see the pictures from my transaxle service by looking in the Clutch Time 3 topic and looking at my second post.

Seems to me that the expense of a rebuild is so high that a person is better off spending just a bit more to get the Quaife, thus taking this as an opportunity to have a much better transmission set up all the way around.
