Our cars do not come with a VSS, check your abs fuse if that is not blown it is most likely the abs module that needs replacement.

my 99 did flash abs light at random times, especially on cold starts. I have driven like that about few months. then the speedo started to jump and bounce back. It was the abs control module was bad. so I bought a good used one from shosource.com and replaced the whole pump/module assy(PITA if you want to disassemble the module itself, just replace the whole unit.) problem solved. no more flashing abs light, no jump speedo.

A couple weeks ago I was in the left turn lane, just over the top of an overpass. Pavement was wet. I realized I was going a bit faster than I should have been (HARDLY EVER HAPPENS!) Depressing brakes a bit harder than normal, the ABS seemed to kick on, but as the pavement was wet, I don't think the tires were able to grab the road during the intermittent locking of the brakes. The effect was like sliding on ice, yet the ABS seemed to be "working" (ABS light was not on at the time). I wound up in a grassy median, just beyond the turn-out across traffic. I am very lucky it was Type A curb, there were no utility boxes or bollards, and there were no other cars waiting to turn. As traffic was on-coming and going about 55 mph, I mashed the gas. Sod was flung about, the swishing of spinning tires on wet pavement was heard, and the smell of burning *something* was smelt. My tires have about 1/3 of the tread left, but wet pavement on a slight decline is a bad recipe even for stickies when you're going fast. My lesson could have been much harder learned!

Good to hear you and the vehicle came out of it OK.

ABS and modern stability control systems can only save you if your tires are as good as possible. Tires and brakes are the two places to never, ever skimp, IMO. I buy the best tires I can and seldom wear them much past half the tread. Its been decades since I used tires as far down as the wear markers, as by that time they are frequently just not up to ***** in the wet, even if still OK for use on dry pavement.

So, glad you are OK, and maybe time for new, good tires, even if they are only at 2/3rd down.
