Hi guys! Just bought my 3rd SHO in life and the other two were much newer when I owned them so didn't really have many problems before. The new one is another 1994 MTX and is definitely a project car that has sat for an unknown amount of time and was running but really rough and with a ton of smoke. So I started with new plugs, wires, oil and filter change, and air filter hoping that it would help and it ran beautifully for 30-45 mins but now has a knocking noise coming from the engine. I figure at this point it's probably just best to pull the engine for a full rebuild/upgrade but have never had to do such extensive work to a car before. It's also in need of other work that would be easier to do without the engine in it as well. How difficult is it to pull the engine at home in a regular garage with no lift? Anyone have some good step by step instructions that I could follow? TIA for any help

here are a few older threads. You will need a hoist no matter what you do. engine stand. power tools help. Big project.

YOu may want to look at rod bearings, assess the damage, and see if it is worth trying to fix. If a bearing spun I would not chance it if a used motor was an option. you might have to do a swap (with new rod bearings). YOu can always go 3.2 block at that point

Thanks! I just found the post about removing all of them together and that seems pretty helpful although I need to replace or at least see if I can recondition my subframe as it is pretty rusty

Be careful as they have a tendency to crack. If it's not just surface and is structural I would look for a replacement. You don't want to do any of that stuff twice

Question can you not weld cracks in the sub frame? Like I mean cut out the bad areas and weld the cracks and structurally reinforce it. I mean at this point it's going to be a real task looking for a decent sub-frame that isn't rusted into obscurity.

It is possible. But i think it depends where the cracks are. If it's like the place where subframe mounts secure it to the car I don't know how that goes. ALso people have done plenty of GenIII subframe swaps.
I would think a healthy search could turn up something useable in the used marked. Is it close by? Maybe not. THere are search engines for used parts and some have condition/distance/price etc on them to compare

I have a rust free southern MTX subframe sitting on my back patio free for the taking. Must come and pick up. Located in Nashville TN.

My experience is that the subframes only crack after they have rusted enough to be deficient structurally, so welding up the crack does not solve the problem.

I've heard of cutting rot part out and welding some steel back together but I have never seen it done.

Hey, no idea if you're still wondering if it's possible to pull an engine through the top without removing the trans and I can say that it absolutely is. It's certainly very difficult but very doable, especially when you have no other options.
