Recently I have difficulties shifting to 1-st gear while engine is running. There is no grinding in the case. Well I grind my teeth when I have to shift. I though my rods went bad, but it shifts smooth when my car is turned off.
Help.

Is first gear the only gear that you are having trouble shifting into? If it was a clutch you'd be having trouble shifting into other gears. Did you hear any noises coming from the tranny before this happened? Did you do anything out of the normal before you noticed the problem?

He said he grinds his teeth...read throughly.

Check your fluid and/or replace your fluid with the recommended. Might just be a bad first gear blocking ring, if it's not old/bad fluid.

It does sound like your throwout bearing and pressure plate fingers have worn to the point of not being able to fully disconnect the transaxle from the engine. You will need a new clutch disk, pressure plate and throwout bearing to do the job right. You can try to extend the life of the current pressure plate and throwout bearing by lifting on the clutch pedal with about 10 pounds of force. Any clicks heard under the dash would indicate that the clutch cable had some slack in it and it was taken out. This may help a little, but you should plan on gathering the parts for the clutch service in the near future.

Wow, sorry I made a mistake... again it wouldn't be a bad blocking ring if he grinds while shifting. Read throughly. "Well I grind my teeth when I have to shift." Sorry I missed that part before. As the others said I would agree with a new clutch diagnosis.

What ELSE would he be grinding??

And arent those "teeth" attached to gears squint
"Recently I have difficulties shifting to 1-st gear while engine is running." Sorry this was the part I read and must have missed the next sentence. If he was ONLY grinding or having trouble shifting into first it would be a 1-2 synchro problem, especially if it was only with the car running. That was just what I was trying to get at. Again sorry for misreading the orignal post.

Firs of all thanks for all the input, and by the way I was grinding my own teeth while shifting.
Thanks again.

Good luck finding your problem. And try not to grind your teeth while shifting, you'll ruin them that way. You might want to invest in a mouth gaurd if you can't help it.

Hard shifting in 1st gear only...1st gear blocking ring. Check and change your fluid first and see what results it has.

FWIW, in my cases, first gear is the first gear that gets tough to shift in when I am having clutch problems, usually followed closely by reverse.

You guys are incredible. How does one read "throughly"? I can read "thoroughly", but not "throughly".

Not to beat a dead horse, but if proper puncuation/proofreading was used in the first place, you would have picked up the intended sarcasm of grinding the teeth in his mouth, not the gearbox.

Change the fluid first to tide you over, but start saving for a cluth job in the near future.
