I have my future 170 deg. Thermostat on order from Torrie. Hopefully will arrive late this week or early next. Price for either SHO or Flex with EcoBoost engine is $74.95 shipped

Here is his e-mail address if you are interested.

This should hopefully keep our temps down a bit when "playing" with our toys!

Will post pix and installation details later.

:thankyou:

Thanks for the info Bob....
I think I'll be placing a order soon....
Do you monitor your engine temp constantly??

Damn! Expensive aint the word. Hopefully it's the fail safe one. And might as well get new spark plugs while your at it. These new SHO motors have to be the easiest out of all of the SHO motors to change plugs out on.

Yes.... I monitor my water temp almost all the time, as I have a MSD DashHawk hooked up,
with it sitting in the storage area where cigar lighter resides. Same screen shows the actual mph number. Occasionally I also check the IAT Temp.

The temp in my Brick is within a degree or 2 of 190 deg, when completely warmed up.
Only time I can recall it going over 200 was when I was going up I-24 to Monteagle, TN, which is a 5-6 mile long up-hill run. Was going up it around 70mph, and temp went up to around 210 by top.

I hope it won't set off any codes.... Currently it takes my Brick at least 4 mi to reach 190. T-stat ships tomorrow. On some short trips it doesn't get close to that. Will install the first nice day after it arrives. If it codes, would guess that your tuner can provide a program mod that can be entered with SCT tuner.

All my GM vehicles with lower temp T-stats have never coded.

One interesting fact about our EcoBoost's engine is that the Catalytic Converters temp never gets to 1,400. degrees, where my G8's 6.0's cats read nearly 1,900 deg. Installing headers on G8's L-76 causes coding within a few days, due to high flow cats not heating up quickly enough for computer's tastes. My tuner, Kirk at Vector Motorsports sent me a tune to resolve this G8 issue that I entered via a Flash Express Cable and my laptop. Not as easy to use as SCT tuner. His tunes lock the G8 ECM and are VIN specific, so cannot be shared. He was the first to do canned G8 tunes... and offered them almost the day the G8 was released in March 08'. Once committed to him, it was cheaper to stay with his products for both of my G8's.

Thanks a bunch Bob! I'll be watching for your reports on it as well. Since I live in FL it's freakin hot here and a little bit more cooling isn't a bad thing.

For the Exhaust guys is there a sensor after the 3rd cat that checks if it's in place? Would usually have to tune that out as well or put a resistor in place to "fool" the Computer. Haven't heard much so I don't think it's an issue. Would like to do some exhaust work as well just have not decided on what custom work I'm gonna do. Might just remove the 3rd cat and muffler/silencer and see how that does. If nothing else it will shed a few pounds off the beast...

On another cooling note, anyone hear anything about an aftermarket intercooler, should be nice to let this thing run nice and cool. I did hear about a bigger radiator for about $500 or so installed, anyone else got any info on that? Would love to get this thing to run reliably in the mid-low 12's. Would let it compete with some of the other fast 4doors out there (CTS-V, M5, ISF, etc). Those being stock of course...

Have also thought about removing 3rd cat and muffler and install an x-pipe, but don't want the sound to change much from my current custom Magnaflows. Growls about like a stock Mustang now. May ask my Naples muffler shop if they can add flanges to both stock take off section and new x-pipe section so I can swap it back in for long trips etc, if it gets too loud. Think this might be a win-win solution. E-mailed Kirk about possibly being able to use his mid-section on Brick, but never heard back. SHO exhaust looks exactly like my Flex's but know it is not the same length. May also be other differences.

Torrie does have a radiator, no direct fit intercoolers that I know of right now and I've been trying to keep an eye on anyting in the works for this vehicle.

If it did throw a code, it could definately be fixed in a tune. I'll be putting one of these in my car for sure. I've said from the beginning that these cars get hot, quick!

I was waiting on the radiator to see what comes out with the new interceptor vehicle. I would assume they would address cooling and brakes on that car.

I was thinking of going with a bullet style muffler to make it less noticeable from the side of the Flex. I know you painted your Magnaflows to match the factory muffler. I was looking at the side the other day and noticed how much muffler is visible from the outside. I think a bullet style would hide nicely up under the back. I wonder how it would sound though?

I guess the EB Flex and SHO use different radiators? I can't wait for the State Police to start using EB Flex's. :)

I was under the impression that the radiators in SHO & EB Flex may be same.

Torrie claims he has a higher capacity radiator to fit EB Flex in any case. Didn't quote an
installation price when asked, so may want to look at fitment issues.

Got installation adobe files on T-stat install. Because T-stat is at top/side of intake on drivers side, coolant loss should be minimal. Hoping I can slowly recover it by loosening
T-stat bolts, and catch coolant as it dribbles out. That's what I did with G8's, and lost very little.

Wish Ford and GM would use same coolant, as I have a ton of Dexi-cool around.... At some point, could use it up winterizing our cottage here in IA, but prefer the $7. a gallon variety... not the $20. stuff!

Be sure to tell your tuner about the new t-stat so they can lower the fan turn on speed.

Just putting in a lower temp t-stat doesn't do a whole lot in the heat of summer unless the fans are on below 200F.

Getting 170 deg T-stat from my TUNER!

Also... may be able to change fan speeds with SCT Tuner that I use to input custom tunes.
I used it to change tire rotation #s.

If I can't,I will get a tune with lowered fan speeds for summer, and go back to the current
tune with what I assume are stock fan speeds, for winter trips north.

My experience with my G8's with 160 deg. T-stats, is that they go to 180 deg in summer, from the 195 deg operating temp, before the new T-stat. I monitor my engine temp with DashHawk, so will know if I need to modify fan settings, and will do so if needed.

Man I look at this and think back to the old L98's which didn't kick the fans on till 242* :)

Honestly throwing a 170* thermostat in seems a little 1970ish to me and I don't really know what would be gained. This engine is far more complex then an old SBC. My understanding was these engines were designed combustion wise to burn hot (1,700*). Keeping that combustion chamber hot is going to ensure good fuel atomization and help mix air and fuel faster for more complete combustion. Being direct injected and having less time to mix than other types of fuel injection I could definitely see this helping. This is where I start to question whether or not you're going to gain or hurt performance. Trying to lower the coolant temp in the block could actually slow the air/fuel mixing process in the combustion chamber and hurt performance.

In this day and age I have to believe that if there was performance/reliability to be gained from varying the thermostat temps the manufacturers would use an electronic thermostat that the ecu could control.
