Let me preface by saying I don't have any codes because these are not mine. I am looking at (2) different GEN3 SHO's for sale and was hoping to get a bit of info from you guys:

1. (1996) On this car, the guy says the tranny slips a bit. Here is the exact info:
Transmission slips in and out of gear while while going but park, reverse, neutral, drive and 1-2 work fine but it does slip less ans vehicle getting closer to normal opperating temp. The slipping isnt bad it actually gets better when the car gets to the normal operating temp
Does this sound like a Tranny going bad? If so, what has been your experience (for those that don't do it themselves) in getting it replaced/rebuilt regarding cost? I remember talking to a Gen3 show enthusiast once about cam welds and he basically said: "Get the welds done and then save up for your tranny fix". So basically, the V8's trannys are known to fail pretty regularly? Any help is greatly appreciated. This one is VERY cheap - and I figure, if I can get it, get the tranny fixed and the cams weld done, it may even out cost wise of getting one in better condition. Only has about 80k miles on it.

2. (1997) This other car has had a ton of work done by the guy who knows his way around a car. He bought it a few years ago, replaced the 90k engine with a new one that has 64k on it. Since then he has:
welded the cams
put new rotors and brakes all the way around
left half shalf
strut srpings on front
rear wheel hubs
2 new mufflers
serp belt
alternator
rear brake lines
Put on new intake and valve cover gaskets, new plugs, new crank sensor and cleaned all the intakes and injectors

He said that right now the gas tank is leaking a bit, somewhat rusty, he thinks from sitting for so long (the car hasn't been driven but a few thousand miles since he got it and started fixing it up. He said the ground effects skirts were pulled and the "rockers are rotting out". Not exactly sure what "rockers" are - waiting for his though on that - unless you guys can tell me. In addition he said there is a "slight" miss coming from cylinder 8, occasionally, and only at a stop sight or stop light. He said he can't figure out what it is - any thoghts?

Anyways, I am limited on budget but have been wanting to get a GEN3 for year. IF the first car needs a tranny rebuild (not sure how much that costs, but guessing quite a bit) then after that and the cams, it'll probably cost more than the 2nd car (but the 2nd car may need a tranny down the road, which would make it pretty expensive).

While I don't have a ton of info on these, I would love your thoughts. I value this sites opinion and appreciate it greatly.

Thanks guys!

A tranny worth the money and installed will cost at least $2k. A new gas tank is under $150.

Thanks! Yeah, he'd be doing the gas tank - probably just getting one of a junk car.

I think I got a quote from a tranny place here that said it would cost about $2,200 or so. Wow!

Is there a certain "time" (mileage etc) where the tranny's generally die?

Thanks again!

It's been my experience that inevitably the tranny will go out when you least expect or can afford replacing it.

Don't buy rusty cars man. Rockers rot because the cowl is usually already gone... Also, Its the rust you can see that should concern you.

The gas tank is rusty, replace the fuel pump while your at it...

I would always go with a better core vehicle than one that just needs a tranny...

IMHO...

At 184,000 on original transmission without a burp so far.

I think it is very dependent on how you drive the car and its upkeep.

sure it is and other things like''heat (kills), so a hot STexas car will probably have a tranny failure long before a BC car would, driven the same way.
YMMV

Also Stephen, you have 184k miles you have put on the car, no?

How many other owners here have cars with 3-6 previous owners on the title or carfax?

Yes, I do, and that is a very good point. It is hard to do anything about what previous owners have done to the car. The point about heat is good too, but much more under your control. One of the first things I did as a mod was put in a transmission fluid temp gauge, and the car has -never- had the transmission overheated. Anyone can do this, and it is not even expensive. Plus, if you pay attention to it, it can save you a rather large amount of money down the road.

Yes, I too have a trans temp gauge and a Gen 2 atx cooler. It is a blessing to know in the summer what the trans temp is.

Cooler $20
Gauge $50

Peace of mind? Priceless

Now that I've raved about my transmission (which still does not lock up the tcc or hold a wot shift) it will probably puke. But 3.5 years of a poor tcc lockup and it's still kickin.
