Problem with the heater A/C climate control.

My son has a red 1995 ATX that has a problem with the heater A/C climate control. It sounds like the blend doors (correct term?) are constantly cycling open and closed or at least trying to. I can hear clunking inside the dash. When A/C is turned on the unit still blows hot air, not ambient hot but heater hot. He loves this car and I’d like to help him keep in good shape. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like your compressor/clutch is not engaging or you need to recharge the A/C.

If the A/C needed recharging or the clutch weren’t engaging I would expect that the air coming through the vent would be close to ambient or slightly warmer than that. The air that is blowing is heater air (very hot). I know what an A/C clutch sounds like when it is defective and cycles on/off but I don’t believe that is the sound I hear. You know that sound you get when you change the climate control temperature from low to high whether is in A/C or heater mode and the blend doors open or close? That’s the sound I hear cycling all the time coming from inside the dash behind the EATC. It seems like what ever is supposed to move the blend door(s) is trying to do so but can’t. I don’t hear that characteristic thud when the door you get when actually shuts.

I am sorry, but you are Incorrect.

Clunking in the dash + air is not the temperature it should be (hot air blows out when temp setting is low or vice versa) = BAD NEWS

Blend door actuator (BDA) is broken.

not too expensive to fix if you are doing it yourself: 69 bucks for a new unit...problem is the entire car is built around this unit. Its like the unit rolls down the assembly line and the rest of the car is bolted to it.

You have to remove the dashboard (yup, you read that right) and the door is in the middle of the car near the top of the firewall. I did replace mine....would do it again if I have to, but that is because my mind has blocked the memory of what a PITA it was to fix.

Raptor is correct.

I'd sent you a PM mistakenly calling this a blower control module, then I realized that was the WRONG name It IS the blend door actuator, little plastic thing that breaks surprisingly easy. Everything else in my PM was correct; it resides behind the dash and though it's a cheap part, there's a whole bunch of labor in pulling the dash to get to it. The shop I had do the work didn't have to remove the dash completely, but they did get it all unbolted and pulled forward about a foot so they could get access to the module.

I was hoping it wasn't the BDA because of the work involved. I figured it would be prudent to eliminate the easy stuff first. I guess in the end it is what it is.
