Could've been that the old hub was damaged and caused the new bearing to wear prematurely. When I did my driver's side bearing, I first only bought the bearing and gave it and my knuckle to the guys at the shop. When I went back to pick it up, they hadn't done anything with it because the old hub had become tapered and fit loosely into the new bearing. I went back again, this time with a new hub, and all is well.

I went through two in 6 months many moons ago. First time, just replaced the bearing, second time, replaced the hub and alll. No problems since, *** we are talking 40K+ miles

It could have been one of three things:

  • the hub is bad (shop should have recognized this the first time)

  • the first wheel bearing was bad (several have reported front replacement bearings failing within months)

  • the bearing was damaged during the install (ie. the shop pressed-in incorrectly)

$250 ?

Ouch !

Wheel bearings are being made almost entirely in China these days. I would seek a low mile recycler part before going the route of a new bearing, FWIW - zak

The hub and bearing assembly is about $65 from AutoZone for the Timken (Made in USA) parts. having a shop press out the old and in the new runs around $25. Shoot, a 12-ton press can be had for as little as $50 through Northern Tools (on sale). I'll bet that the last bearing was damaged during the installation when they pushed out the inner race. I watched in horror as a shop did that to one of my bearings and it lasted only about 40,000 miles. The original parts lasted 240,000 miles.

I agree. Last summer, I had a driver's side bearing go out on me 200 miles from home (went out all at once). Had a local Toyota Dealership replace it, $150. When I got home I decided to go ahead and do the other side. I pulled the passenger side hub (45 minutes) and took it to a local foriegn car repair shop down the street. They had modified a press just to do wheel bearings. The owner told me that the press was one of the best things he had ever done in the shop. Prior to the special press, they were seeing about a 10% failure rate in replaced bearings. He thought it was something to do with the race being pressed in "uneven". He charged me $20.

$20 is about right! :) I had to do mine twice. Driver side too. New hub and bearing, and still it was loose after less than 2000 miles. Replaced it with the same PN, and its been ok for about 4000. Like my mechanic friend says, "dead babies are born everyday" parts arent much different. I remember having to pound out the wheel studs on the second one, because the studs were about 1/2" shorter too. Man wheel bearings are fun arent they?

Edit.... also what about the 'preload' on the bearing? If that big nut on the CV shaft isn't tight, won't that lead to premature wear?

Exactly, improper installation is probably the most common cause of bearing failure in the V6 cars.

And don't cheap out by skipping the hub. Do it right, do it once.

Well so far so good, but now the pass side wheel has alot of play when u grab the wheel and move it. It goes up and down and left and right loose during both tests. I guess ill replace the hub and bearing on that side now too lol. Damn things:). Thank you for the comments.

Make sure you're setting the torque on the axle nut correctly. IIRC, the proper torque for the axle nut is 180 to 200lb.ft. Also, avoid using an impact gun to install the axle nut, as this also can damage the bearing race.
