The SHO is down! Overheated in Manhattan...

14th between 2nd and 3rd avenue was as far as I made it.

It turned out to be a dead radiator fan, but the engine got waaay hot. Needle in the red, and the overflow bottle was spewing coolant like no one's business. Luckily, it never seized. I had it towed home (to the tune of $225 ) and today I completely backflushed everything out of the coolant system.

It starts and runs ok (not that I can go anywhere until I track down a new radiator fan or fan motor), but is there anything I should keep an eye out for that may leave me in a bad way at some point?

Change the oil asap. Heat breaks down the oil very quickly.

Otherwise just keep an eye on the temps and the coolant level.

except for a warped head gasket, there's not a whole lot to worry about. As long as the engine didn't seize, you shouldn't have messed up any bearings. Just make sure you change the oil since getting it that hot removes almost all the protective qualities of it. I don't know whether you have an ATX or not but either way I'd recommend changing the tranny fluid, since I bet that got pretty hot as well.

Also, I would recommend flushing the power steering fluid as well. Just to be on the safe side... everything gets real hot down there, you know?

Don't wanna **** your mojo, but only the engine oil would need to be changed. Been doin this stuff for 12 years and never seen a tranny or PS pump bake because the motor overheated. (although I have seen 1 tranny bake, but from constant overheating, 1 year +)

There's 3 fresh quarts of Synchromesh in there now... no need to flush. I'll make sure I drain and refill the oil. Thanks for the heads up on that.

the worst that I see happening is premature seal wear. Hello leaks. Hello smoke in exhaust. I think the valve stem seals are your biggest concern.

I've been told that especially in Fords it is a good idea to change the thermostat and the temp sender ( for the gauge) as overheating both of these causes the metal to change and therefore change how well they function.

I'll take my chances on the thermostat, as it's not a Ford unit (manufactured in Japan). And I have a new temp sender sitting in a box on a shelf in my garage, so double w00t!

Glad you didn't get mugged while you were broken down. Haha seriously. I see you're from Queens so you know how things are there. I got lost in Manhattan in my SHO a few years ago after midnight.... lost for a couple hours. Crossed my fingers the car didn't break down on me that night lol.
