I did a search and came across an old post about putting ATX Fluid in the gas tank to clean dirty valves. Is this some kind of joke? Has anyone actually done this to clean their valves? If so were there any ill effects?

Been there done that, works great. It may lower the octane rating of the fuel though.

yeah not a lot, atf is a great cleaning agent, works great to unseize engines too. I know back in the day it was used to clean engines, im still worried about putting it in a fuel injected car though. Usually you just dump it straight down the carb and rev the crap out of the engine so you bypass the tank and everything else. Im still worried about sludge on the bottom of my tank and clogging up injectors, but then again its supposed to clean right?

IMHO the ATX fluid trick is for when you don't have anything else available. If you're not desparate, get some Redline Fuel System Cleaner. It'll do the same thing and do it a bit better than ATX fluid.

If I use ATX fluid (and I have, it works like a champ BTW), I follow it with some (ok, a lot of) SeaFoam. I'm a little paranoid as well, but ATX is thin enough that it doesn't seem like it would gunk anything up.

The Redline is great stuff but you need to make sure you are going to burn the full tank within a few days.

It will eat fuel lines if left in the system too long.

ATF is a lubricant and a cleanser. I personally have never added it to the gas tank, But I have ran it inside an engine once to clean it. Ran it for no more than 5 minutes and it really helped. I dont know how smart it was but I've seen many other people do it before...

I have used it on newer engines by letting the engine suck it through a smaller vacuum line on a warmed up engine only using about a quater of a quart. Then I shut the engine off for about an hour to let it soak everything. Then when you crank it up it is smoke time For 15 minutes.

used Atf is the primary source of fuel for my friends 99 powerstroke. A little white smoke sometimes but it is free!!!!! Is this a great country or what?

Isn't that pretty similar to the ol' "berryman's intake cleaner" trick on SHOtimes from a while back?
