My '12 SHO PP came from the factory with the fix a flat/inflator kit that somebody before me used, and I would like to replace it with an actual spare tire. I found a kit locally from an '11 SEL with a 17" donut spare, does anyone know if this will clear everything up front? Thanks.

Jasong, not sure what a 17" donut could do since your sho is awd. I've wanted to replace my inflator kit with a full size spare so I'm not waiting for road service if something happens that the inflator cant resolve. From what I understand, our awd systems are very particular when rim size, tire size and tread wear, all needing to be the same. When I replaced my 4 tires, I kept the best one for a spare. Now just looking for a decent used 20" rim, or will buy a new one, replace one of the rims that has curb rash for the spare. I know the full size spare will be too wide to fit under the cargo cover. Others may comment on the risks of a donut spare.

AAA+ is IMO best bang for your buck. It's under $100 a year which gives you 5 tows up to 100 miles. If you can't find a tire within a 100 miles of where you live or drive then maybe consider otherwise. Donuts are only rated for 50 miles max anyway. Really not sure what a donut would do if you had to lump it a couple miles with the awd. I imagine it wouldn't like it at all. They designed it without a donut for a reason. If you're thinking you could need a spare for your driving habits then I would keep a full size for sure.

Most of my trips with the car are pretty close to home, so I'd just like an actual spare tire to limp the car home if needed, but I'd also like it to fit under the cover in the trunk. I have seen that the awd is rather particular regarding overall diameter/rollout, so I'm looking for a donut that is as close as possible to our stock diameter of 28.6". The closest I've found so far are a 17" wheel/27.5" overall and a 18" wheel/27" overall from the '11-'19 Explorers. Not sure if either wheel will clear the brakes but my '14 Explorer has the 18"/27" setup so I'll see if that setup fits sometime this winter.

I passed on the kit I found locally as it was a full 3" shorter than stock diameter, and by the looks of the pictures, the wheel wouldn't clear the brakes.

Lowrider- I have the Ford ESP with roadside assistance, but prefer to have a spare so I can change the tire and be on my way, rather than waiting on the side of a highway for them.
Jasong- A full size spare definitely won't fit under the cover in the trunk. Good luck finding the right donut spare.

Happy motoring guys!

Don't the regular Taurus of similar year have a donut spare? I don't own the new ones so brake comps with SLOs are not in my mind but they are the same(ish) car so if brakes are same size should work.

I have an SEL and a SHO PP. I believe the SEL's 17" spare (-11% diameter difference vs the stock 245/45 20) was a little too small for the SHO's AWD system, compared to the 18" spare.

So, I went with an 18" alloy spare from an Explorer on Ebay, P/N FB53-1007-TA, with a T165/70 D18 tire, with a closer diameter to the stock 20s (-5.6% diameter difference). I've never used it, but installed it on my PP's rear wheel location to test fitment/brake clearance without issue. (See my pics)

Don't forget, to complete the OEM-looking install, you will need a jack/lug wrench kit AND the jack retaining bracket and nut. Some kits include the bracket and nut and others do not.

FWIW, the Flat/Inflator kit that came with the PP has a sticker on it that says not to exceed 50 mph. So technically, both options are only good for 50 mph.

While most functional as a spare, the full size 18" steel spare option is more pricey and will reduce trunk storage. Here is a post including the P/Ns for the foam insert and matching trunk cover:

For PI vehicles, the full size 18" steel wheel installed in the factory location is required for their 75 mph rear-end impact rating.

The non-PP SHO comes with a mini spare, why not find one of those? If I had to guess, it's probably an 18", could be 17". I'm sure, whichever size, is the same as all the other 2010+ Taurus models.

Luckily, for my non SHO, both performancespare.com and modernspare.com had complete mini spare kits, with jacks and a spacer to let the 18" mini fit over my 6-piston Brembos up front.

I ain't gonna wait 3 hours for a flatbed from AAA, to tow me to a tire store that doesn't have a tire in my brand/size. I carry the mini on all trips.

Yeah, the big diameter difference is why I passed on the SEL kit. I haven't seen the alloy spare from the Explorers yet, my '14 has an 18" steel with the 165-70-18. I plan to test fit it on my SHO front and back to check brake clearance.

Have you checked your alloy on the front?

No, never got around to it.

Although, I don't put temp spares on the front; I move a rear tire up for a front flat. (Unless I was really in a jam.)
Okay, understandable.

I've been looking into other OE setups that might work. A '7-'12 Mazda CX-7 spare is the same bolt pattern, an 18" wheel, and a 29" tall tire which is only a .5" taller than our stock height, I'm just doubting it would clear the brakes up front.

Why not just search out a Police sedan in a junk yard, pull a wheel, Jack etc., throw on a cheap tire and be done.

If you have the 2010 to 12 stock brake package, the 17 inch donut should fit. If you have the 2013 on brakes, you will need at least an 18 inch donut spare to clear the brake calipers.

They are the stock 10-12 PP brakes. That is good to know as there is a 17" option from an Explorer that is within an inch of the stock diameter.

Finally test-fitted the 18" alloy wheel on the front of the SHO PP. It cleared the calipers and spun without issue.

Below are a few pics for reference:

Thanks, that will be where I head if the 18" steelie from my Exploder doesn't work.

Good point. My non-PP 2011 came with the compact spare, but I never test-fitted it. That'll come shortly. Since the SHO has the same size all around, I like the idea of going to a full sized spare if it'll fit in the well.

Had some time to tinker with this today, and I can confirm that the 18"/27" steel setup from the '11-'14 Explorer will clear the brakes and fit under the cover in the trunk.

Grabbed it from my local junkyard for $20. I noticed a Limited and a SEL there when I was there this afternoon, so I'll stop in Wednesday and grab a anchor/jack kit.
