StealBlueSho - Pardon my ignorance but is this a 'bad' thing i.e. don't you want the the power cut at these times to avoid damage?;
"I have personally seen the PCM close the throttle, drop boost, cut power, etc when rail pressure drops. I have also seen lean conditions which is not directly tied to fuel pressure cause the throttle to close up. "

You are correct, I’m just giving you examples of when I have seen the PCM step in to prevent damage to the motor. I think you may have misinterpreted the information as “bad”.

...also, StealBlueSho I have the latest LMS tune that updates the v11 and v14 and which dials down the power a little to avoid the missed shifts, hesitation, shudder and other issues people are having in cold weather. It works. The problem is once you've experienced the v11 performance its hard to accept lower performance as the difference is noticeable.

Now that I have the latest version I feel to go back to the v11 I'm going to have to either purchase the $1,500 pump or move to a different platform such as GH who you are advocating as providing similar v11 performance without a pump. It looks like the price to change platforms now would likely be similar in price to the pump once you start adding on GH tunes. I really just want a plug and play without data logging for this daily. My thought is the LMS provides this with the pump and also provides for a bit more aggressive tuning than the v11. Does this analysis make sense or am I missing something? Thank you.

I will answer this in two parts. The first is addressing the HPFP and LMS tunes. The HPFP will stabilize the fueling issues with the V11 tune without a doubt. If you are looking for a plug and play solution that provides great power and you don't need to worry about pretty much anything besides maintenance, then the LMS setup is a good way to go. Assuming you are already invested with their tune. As far as performance is concerned, the V11 HPFP tune is the exact same power wise as the V11 without the HPFP. Having the HPFP will allow you to request E30 tunes from LMS which does up the power if you ask for an aggressive tune. Having realistic expectations up front are good, and the expectation should be you are investing into a product that will alleviate any fueling issues to provide a set and forget configuration. Obviously if you are experiencing issues with the V11 tune with hesitation etc, then you will see a performance increase with the HPFP by virtue of properly fueling the car.

The second part about Gearhead... His auto octane tune doesn't have fueling issues which is a direct result of how Matt tunes. I can attest to this as I run his tunes as well as LMS. I have had a heads up race at the track with the LMS V11 HPFP against another SHO that just had the Auto Octane tune without a HPFP. The results were very similar ET's. 12.799 vs 12.813(iirc) with LMS edging out GH by a hair. However, I was consistently 3MPH faster at the trap with the LMS tune. Point being is that they are both plug and play solutions that offer great performance. With the Gearhead Auto Octane tune, you don't need to datalog either, its a plug/play solution where you only need to worry about general maintenance afterwards as well.

Cost... The fuel pump is $1600... you can buy a new SCT device for $399 plus the $100 for the cost of the tune. Matt will want you to switch to SP-542 plugs, so tack on another $50.. so all in your are at $549 which is over $1,000 less for similar performance and more flexibility with the auto octane solution. The auto octane tune is far more advanced than the LMS V11 tune.

I like both tuners, as they have both been good to me. Its really up to you on what you want to do. I will say that you need to look at your goals.. if you want to run E blends and/or planning on doing more modifications such a bigger turbos, etc.. then an upgrade HPFP might be worth it.

Thank you so much for the comprehensive reply.

My mistake, I thought that you had to pay GH $100 each time if you wanted alterations e.g. fans to come on earlier etc. I didn't realize that any tune modifications were included in the price like LMS. That is a significant price difference! Also, wouldn't I want the 5015P and not the 7015? I assume it has more features for just $200 more.

Also, I don't see racing the car, upgrading turbos/fuel/intercooler so possibly the more economical GH tune is the sensible approach.

I don’t know if Gearhead charges for additional calibration changes, that something you would need to talk to them about. But you shouldn’t need any unless there is something specific you are looking for?

The 7015 Livewire is a nice unit, the gauges are much more customizable than the 5015.

One last question - why do say "The autooctane tune is far more advanced than the LMS V11 tune. " Is it because it auto adjusts or is there an additional reason?

There are a lot of reasons...Matt puts a ton of protections into the tunes such as not only scaling spark based on IATS but also boost. His auto octane tune adjusts not only spark but also boost based on octane... Matt has mentioned to me tons of stuff that he has adjusted to get optimal performance, comfort, gas mileage. There is A LOT under the covers with Matt’s work.

LMS does not have auto octane, and they don’t adjust boost based on IATS... they may do other things but haven’t communicated it.

Thank you . I would think LMS and their long history of testing will have produced similar proprietary protections as borne by the lack of reported destroyed engines .

Not saying that they don’t, however, they are more secretive with their tuning. Hence the communication bit.

You can not go wrong with either tuner IMHO. They both are very good. I personally struggle at times on which tune I like to run. Both shops are well respected and have turned out very good results.

Gearhead has traditionally been a diesel tuning company, and has really taken the Ecoboost tuning to another level with their tuning.

Livernois has been in the game from the start, and still currently has the fastest Ecoboost SHO on record. They are 10 years into Ecoboost tuning without any major issues, that speaks volumes in and of itself.

Point is, you cannot go wrong either way.

I would say if you really like your current tuner then stick with them if you are having this much concern over which way to go. A bird in hand is better than two in the bush..

Sage advice .

Nothing against GH but 10 years of LMS development does speak volumes. Kind of like insurance staying with them . The cost of this insurance as you pointed out above is under $1,000 assuming I opted for the upgraded Livewire device . I'm willing to pay for the cost of that policy particularly if it provides an option to get more aggressive in the future .

Thank you for helping me walk through the analysis.

Apparently, this is what you need to do

"My buddys sho ran a 10.8 1/4. No kidding. Over 500whp. Tuned by keiths pitstop in gettysburg pa. No meth. Stock turbos. Simple upgrades. Some wiring mods to cpu."

This from yaycandy, AKA, Curtis something, AKA, FOS.

I know that with their new software (hence the new device) they are going to be releasing newer updated tune files. Dunno when, but it’s supposed happen at some point.

All the current tunes are labeled “conv” on the new device and they have told me eventually new tunes are going to be released.
