Replacing the PTU or the PTU fluid?
That was to replace the PTU, they said they have to verify that the PTU is the culprit. Now I managed to find a shop that is willing to drain it and refill X3 with fresh fluid. Will do that for now until I can come up with the funds :(

Edit: this shop also has 2 master certified ford techs, and told me if I could source a PTU, they will install it for me, he said about 5 hours labor cost.

Can someone help me find the correct PTU for my car?

Call a dealership with your VIN handy for a price quote and have them give you a part number at the same time.

This is the TSB in question: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMOTOR/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=171259

Edit: I don’t see anywhere in this tsb where it mentions draining the old fluid before refilling it?
It doesn't mention draining the old fluid because it mentions removing the entire PTU. When you remove the shafts from the PTU the fluid is going to come out the openings. While it doesn't directly state to drain the PTU it will happen when performing WSM section 308-07 remove PTU.

It is extremely frustrating! I’ve now called 4 dealers to get a quote on replacing the PTU, all of them said they have to look at it first. All of them want to charge a diagnostic fee of at least 129$
I've had similar things happen when taking my old vehicle to Ford once. They wanted to diagnose the problem I had already diagnosed and charge the fee. In person I politely discussed with them what I had done and that I didn't want them to diagnose. I simply wanted them to change the part no questions asked, just do it. I signed a statement stating I wouldn't receive any warranty on the work or that it would fix the problem. The only warranty I was receiving was for the part itself. After doing all that they finally changed the part and I didn't have any issues.

The dealers want to diagnose the problem because in most cases they are going to be held liable to an extent that it fixes the problem or warranty work. Without them knowing the full extent of the issue and the cause of the problem, they aren't able to provide the warranty most people expect. You might be able to talk to them and tell them you just want the work done no strings or warranty attached to get rid of the fee.

If you are paying out of pocket, you should be able to get full warranty on the work. When they perform the work, they may notice potential issues that would compromise the work down the road and bring it to your attention. THEN I can understand additional fees at that point. But since essentially you are having preventive work done, there is no need for a diagnostic that YOU have to pay for, IMHO.

Just because they have Master Techs doesn't mean they are any good btw.

And you can get a much better deal from a FORD dealer on the PTU buying it online or via eBay

Just got the PTU drained and refilled x3, tech said it was almost bone dry! He cleaned up as much of the fluid from that had leaked out as he could. Still got that nasty smell in the cabin, but I guess that could be left over fluid that’s on the exhaust system?

Ended up paying 140$ for the drain and refill x3.
At least it’s got some fresh fluid in there. :)

Cool someone finally stepped up! I would keep an eye on it on a monthly basis till you can confirm the fluid isnt getting nasty anymore

I will second monitoring the PTU. Usually venting oil out the vent is a sure sign of a dying put. I may be wrong.
It's generally a sign that the oil is sludging up and needs changed. What's happening is there is an air/oil separator in the PTU. It's essentially a horizontal tube area with a hole on the top (the PTU vent) and a hole on the bottom (to allow the oil to fall back down into the PTU). When the PTU spins it throws oil into this separator. When the oil starts to sludge up it will cause the lower hole to plug up and not allow oil to drain. This means oil is getting slung into the separator and the only way out is through the vent.

Mine was puking out of the vent when I got it. So I changed it several times in quick succession to get all new fluid and "wash" out the sludge. Since then, I haven't had any issues or fluid coming out of the vent.

I’m still having the smell in the cabin after some driving, but the tech did tell me there’s a lot of gear oil all over the exhaust system. Guess it could be that? Will probably get it flushed again in a month or so.

This morning the sho started making a humming noise as I was driving to work, just drove it back home now, and the noise kept getting louder. Guess it’s time to bite the bullet and order that PTU :(

Left the car at the Ford dealer last night, I wasn’t sure that the car would make it to the independent shop.
