Going to start planning for a clutch replacement on the 95. My TOB is wearing down. I want a stock Valeo clutch. My question is this:

Should I buy it from Autozone for $274 + tax with a lifetime warranty or buy from an online vendor for $245 shipped?

I realize the AZ lifetime warranty is a good thing, but a clutch is a wear item like brakes. Is it worth paying a little more to get it from AZ? $245 shipped is the cheapest I've found a new Valeo set unless someone else can refer me to a cheaper place.

I'll probably have Chris (ShadetreeSHOguy) replace it for me when I'm ready to have it done. I can come out way cheaper than have the local shop do it.

$30 more for a lifetime warranty? If you're planning on keeping the car, there is no question about it! Plus, it's easier to deal with a local place than some 'online store' if you ever have any problems. That's definitely worth $30 to me...

I would stay away from Autozone for clutches. Did you look at RCM? Think they have a promotion or something?

Go with a clutch from shosource.com those guys are awesome and have a wide variety of clutches! Plus I have seen those AZ clutches slip after only about 10,000 miles (speaking from a former manager of AZ) spend your money on a staged clutch

the lifetime warranty will certainly not apply to worn out clutch, worn pressure plate fingers, or a worn out tob.

I want a stock Valeo and RCM has them for $245 shipped, so they're the cheapest. I also assumed any lifetime warranty was for mfg. defects since this is a "wear" item. Chances are, if the thing wears out prematurely and I have to pay someone to pull the whole thing apart again, I'd buy another brand before I trusted something that might prematurely fail again. That's why I questioned even using such a warranty.

Oh, RockAuto has the absolute cheapest at $212 shipped but it's a Rhinopac. Anyone know about these? Are they a Valeo equivalent? I don't want a heavy aftermarket race clutch; just a stock unit.

Rhinopac is a decent clutch. The last Valeo clutch I installed disappointed me by including a TOB that was made in China. I ended up getting a different brand TOB bearing that only cost maybe $10. As far as the lifetime warranty goes you need to read the fine print from AZ, I never bought brake pads there but I had a friend of mine a few years ago constantly return worn out pads and they never once not gave him a new set and thats a wear item.

Here is AZ waranty policy:

If a part fails during the warranty period shown on your receipt, bring the part to any AutoZone store and you will receive a replacement or refund. Warranty excludes damage caused by misuse, abuse, other faulty parts, improper installation or off-road, commercial or marine use. Warranties on replacement parts cover the unused portion of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer. Warranties expire when you sell your vehicle.

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY REPRESENTS THE TOTAL LIABILITY OF AUTOZONE, FOR ANY PART OR PRODUCT. AUTOZONE MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. AUTOZONE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or exclusion or limitation on incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

Screw it, just crush it :)

The AZ clutch is a stock replacement. Here's the issue though. You do not know howlong said clutch kit has been sitting on the shelf. The one we just put in SuperchargedSHOguy's 91 was still in the old "dynapack" box and had a REVISION A tob.

And speaking of the AZ warranty, The local ones around here just started this big kick about what brake pads are not covered. The warranty coverage there really depends on the training and mood of the person behind the counter there ;)

Meh, sounds like I could just buy the RCM or RockAuto one and save a few bucks. Is the Rhinopac a Valeo or something totally different?

I learned a long time ago that the clutch is NOT something on a V6 SHO that you want to go cheap on.

And are you seriously hung up on some sort of warranty?
The labor alone involved in replacing a clutch makes putting a cheap clutch (with some sort of warranty) a pretty silly idea.

Order one from SHOsource and be done with it.

I'm not spending $600 on a clutch. I'm not ******* my car, nor do I want a heavy race setup. Both of my cars are stock. For the less than 10,000 miles a year I drive both of my SHOs (really closer to 3000-5000 miles a year). I've already found someone who will install the clutch for a reasonable amount of $.

I ordered that one from rcm too. I will NEVER do it again. Clutch was good repair sleeve was crap, and rcm will never respond after they have your cash. I will say that Shosource was able to step up and fix it for me. The clutch has held up great.
