I had a '95 SHO that had the same problem. I first noticed it around 75k miles. For about a year every two weeks I'd pull the wires off the plugs and shove paper towels down the wells to soak the oil out. Don't leave them in there! I finally ordered a valve cover gasket kit and replaced the seals around the plug wells. While I was doing that I replaced the plugs too. It took me two days to remove everything, replace the seals and put it back together. But it worked and it started right up! Wish I had taken pics, that is a beautiful engine, even when the intake is off! Better find an individual with experience, it was a bear to do. I think the worst part was the two bolts by the front windshield. They are really hard to get to, you need small hands to get down around the cover.
Good luck!

lol... you do not need to pull the motor to do replace the spark plug well seals.

You need to do a Top 60K.

Here is how you do it.

Don't worry so much about the valve adjustment unless your REALLY think it needs to be done. Otherwise, Just replace the gaskets, Plugs and Plug wires.

wow, that's an awesome link, oh how I remember doing that job on the '95 I had! thanks for sharing!

Tampons, man.

Look at that hole.

Look at a tampon.

It works.

Don't ask me how I know this.

How do you know this?

Mangina.

And to kinda keep things on track, Sam is correct. Top 60k. Replace the VC and plug well gaskets, spark plugs, and wires. You'll need feeler gauges to check the valve clearances.

Also keep in mind that SHOSource is a great place to get your parts from, AND they have valve shim rental kits.

(wow, I kinda feel like Matt, 'cept aye speeled kereckkally :) )

QFT!! i used this trick the last time my plug well seals went south and things went SO much smoother. also...two days to change valve cover gaskets?? were you using your fingers to loosen bolts? it's a 2 hour job at best, including crawling around under the car for dropped bolts, cleaning the shit out of the valve covers, and re-seating the rear cover three times due to the gasket rolling over.

My question is more about why single guys would have tampons......

Been married 5 years; this should answer many of the questions posed. As for why single guys would have tampons? Well ****, girlfriends always appreciate a thoughtful guy. Never know when Aunt Flo comes to visit...

So is it possible for a two guys with pretty good mech skills to do?

Possibe? ****, it's possible for one guy with little/medium tech skill to do, it should be a piece of cake for two guys to do. Just don't forget all the little vacuum and coolant lines on the intake. Don't yank anything.

It's very easy to do, and your choices are do it, or keep a steady supply of womanly products on hand to keep emptying out your plug wells.

Yeah, and you're gonna get pretty tired of answering, "Why do you have a box of tampons in your glove box?"

Or you could install six tiny sump pumps...

Got a lot of practice with valve covers last weekend. The rear bank is the annoying one, especially if you leave the fuel lines connected. Gotta get around the heater line, the main engine harness by the firewall and the engine harness under the fuel lines. Try not to knock the valve cover or plug well gaskets off while reassembling.

I'm in N. Fl. have had 12 SHO's over the yrs and have 3 now. The only automatic is on the patio with the same problems as your having. Bad running, oil in the wells. EGR code 332. In fact the plugs were not even tight, I took them out by hand with no rachet! As I explained in your other thread the manifold was filthy and pluged up at the EGR sample tube.

If you are close enough to Gainesville, come on down and I'll help walk you through this. Or if your not to far, reimburse me for gas I can come to you with a Helms book and 10 yrs of experience. Hate to see a SHO down and could use a road trip, lol.

A manifold on a MTX comes off the 20 minutes, the ATX took 30. It is not that difficult, I'm no mechanic, lol. Depending on the available funds you have, a lot can be done at this time. Do the most you can any time there is a tear down. Nothing beats a full 60K tune up and replacement of gaskets and seals involed!
