I am looking for a dash kit for my 89, does anyone have any helpful information with this?

I ran across a website and couldn't find one that specifically lists for the 89 SHO but I ran across one that looks like it might work from Best Buy. Click Here. I would check measurements at the store but it's only available online, as not one Best Buy has this item in stock around here.

That best buy kit is a univeral kit that will work for your car.. it's not designed specifically for it, but it will work just fine.

I've used several install kits in three different '89s. Two were slightly undersize and showed some of the metal of the actual stereo between the dash bezel and the plastic from the kit.

The third (broken now unfortunately, so not what I have in the car) was slightly oversize. I was able to file the plastic for a tight fit.

One came from Crutchfield, one from WalMart and the other from a local stereo shop about 10 years ago. I think the Crutchfield one was the oversize one, but can't say for sure.

Depth is the issue, especially if you're running 2+ pairs of RCAs. If you just try to stuff it all in there the stereo won't fit. Carefully tuck everything behind all those (sharp) metal brackets in the stereo area and most stereos should fit fine.

Did you use this kit in an 89 dash? If you did, would you happen to have any pictures of the install?

I did not use it on the '89 dash, I used it on my '95 because someone already replaced the one on my '89. The kit they used on my '89 does look the same as my '95 however. Sorry I can't be more help

Here's a couple of shots.

From the driver's seat it looks perfectly fine:

There's some wiggle room with most of these kits. You can spend a lot of time trying to get the stereo centered. I ended up mounting it lower so the larger gap is at the top. From the driver's seat it's not noticeable.

In the bottom picture you can see some file marks on the bezel from the other (larger) mounting kit. And you can see a lot of good old Arizona dust :)

Thanks for the post. I would like a kit that allows the aftermarket trim piece to install outside the dash, that way the head unit doesn't look sunk in the dash and the trim piece will seal flush with the dash. I got mine pretty close to the picture above with the factory metal brackets screwed to the sides of the unit. I guess I'm being picky, but I'm trying to get my interior looking nice and factory looking.
