I jumped in the car this morning, and the clutch pedal was real stiff, almost like something was in the way. With the car started, I could not get it into first at all. With some effort, it would go into second. There wasn't any grinding. I was able to get moving, and drove up and down the street. Shifted to 3rd ok, and was able to eventually get it into first.

Stopped infront of the house, and can't get in into first again. If I turn it off, it goes in fine, but with the car running nothing.

I just replaced the sturts, only have one trip to the alignment shop and work on the car since that. I don't know why that would matter, but seems odd to have a failure right after that.

Any idea what the problem is? I just spent way too much for the car to die on me now.

Best guess? You need a new clutch. The fingers are broken on the diaphragm.

If that's not it, you'll probably still need to remove the trans to have a look. If you are lucky, removing the starter will allow a couple of chicklet sized hunks of pressure plate finger to fall out, confirming the diagnosis.

On the last 2 clutches that I have put in, the symptoms always appear after someone else has been driving the car.
93rev2serv is bang on. Either your Throw Out Bearing (TOB) collapsed internally or the pressure plate fingers got nibbled down and broke off. Either way the cure is a new clutch.
It happens over a long period of time, it is no bodys fault, it is just the way it is.
There are some great shops on this thread that will do the labour for $500.00 and the clutch is not bad at around $250.00 (and less on sale). Some people do the labour themselves.

Pull up on the clutch pedal, it'll adjust automatically. I usually do it with my foot, press the clutch pedal down, pull up again, and do it three times to make sure it's taken care of. This should be done on 3PedalSHO's car, as well.

I once had a tow company take off with my SHO and I got it back with a stiff clutch, hard to get in gears, and slipping when in gear. I put the car on a trailer to get back home and made them write out a check before I left to take care of the replacement and install, after they refused to have their mechanics fix the problem. When I went to take it off the trailer, my foot hit the clutch pedal upwards and "click, click" the SHO was fixed.

on the clutch adjuster is a tab you can push, its on the top of the assembly, it is the top part of one of the gears, I believe grey in color. this allows it to release(lengthen) so you can pull it out of the shift fork or such(for removing the transmission or swapping the cable)....

with some slack on the cable make sure it moves freely, then hook it back up to the pedal and shift fork

after that is done then go about doing the clutch adjusting procedure again(pushing up on the pedal) and see if that helps

another thing to think about, if its very stiff, the tob siezed or has a rough time moving on the quill sleeve(always **** that up) or a piece of the pressure plate finger or a spring on the clutch disc got lodged into your pressure plate....... you goto press on the pedal and it physically won't move anymore unless you break something and then it will continue on.

this will probably require the transmission to be removed to inspect the clutch system, you will probably see what happened very easily........

Me friend had this happen to him and it ended up being a diaphragm finger that had broken off and got in between the diaphragm and clutch plate. Might make sense in your case, if a piece of a finger is moving around while the plate is spinning or something...

Check to make sure that your power steering cooler lines arent rubbing the clutch mechanism that the cable connects to. Happened to me and it didn't end well
